#417: Martin McDonagh / Top 5 Movie Pets
« on: October 12, 2012, 02:37:42 AM »
On this fun, culture-filled edition of Filmspotting, Adam's conversation with writer/director Martin McDonagh about his latest dark comedy, "Seven Psychopaths," starring Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken and a Shih Tzu named Bonny… the inspiration for this week’s Top 5: Movie Pets.

I like the 2 pet lists although, of course, my list is different. Then again will so many pets to chose from it is not surprising. My list:

Mr Pericval a pelican from Storm Boy (1976), this choice is very much based on my childhood memories as is my next choice
Mij an otter from Ring of Bright Water (1969), many many tears fell over this one
'Beachball' the alien from Dark Star (1974), it is probably sentient, but it is kept like a pet, so it makes this list
Lassie a dog, like you did not know
Grommit a dog from the Walace and Grommit films

I'm glad to see you're still on speaking terms after the heated discussion in last week's extras!
That was quite... something! It felt as if you almost went physical about it.

Re: this week's extra it's sad to hear about Adam's hatred for Falling down. But considering how different views the hosts have had on other films I'm hopeful that Josh will ignore the complaints and watch it anyway.

Adam, im so glad you guys are doing Ganja and Hess since i was disappointed it got beat out on the SVU vote earlier this year. Its a great film and Duane Jones(his only other lead role besides Night of the Living Dead) is superb the soundtrack is also great and it was done by Nina Simone's brother. I wouldn't really call it a blaxploitation film though because it fall somewhere  in the middle of blaxploitation and something like a Killer of Sheep. The history of the film is pretty interesting too going from a standing ovation at Cannes and being voted one of the top ten films of the decade by Cannes to being recut into obscurity and retitled numerous times.

There is a great little video about the film on Youtube.

Martin McDonagh is the least Irish-sounding Irishman I've ever heard in my life.

North London I think. His brother is even less Irish sounding and more London sounding (can't say Cockney, that means something different to me).
I used to encourage everyone I knew to make art; I don't do that so much anymore. - Banksy

Yeah, I figured - Wikipedia just told me that they both spent their entire lives in England! That surprises me as I think they have authentically Irish writing voices.

The singing in Massacre Theatre was a definite improvement over Sam and Adam's duet of that song from An Officer and a Gentleman in Cinecast 56.

Loved the Pets Top 5, expecially mentions for BABE and GROMIT, both wonderful creations.

My thoughts were going in completely different directions...

- Whoever was in the sack in Odishon/Audition
- The Gimp in Pulp Fiction
- Baby the Leopard in Bringing Up Baby

I think I need some more sleep.
