Noir-vember Group Marathon 2012
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:10:32 AM »
Welcome to the 3rd annual Noir-vember, where we watch, review and discuss the "crime thrillers" and "murder dramas" of the 40's and 50's.  As well as the gangster pictures of the 30's, late noirs of the early 60's, neo-noirs of the 70's and beyond, and anything in between.  Since noir is different things to different people, if you feel like it belongs here, then it probably does.

I will keep an index of the reviews in this post.

I guess since 1SO started the Shocktober thread in September, so there's a precedent here, BUT I DON'T LIKE IT! Months are arbitrary time periods for a reason, dammit!

I'm not starting my noir watching until November 1st (I didn't like it when 1SO jumped the gun on Shocktober either) I just wanted to get the thread rolling and gauge interest.

As I did last year, I'll be concentrating on TSPDT's "More American Noir Films (Category A)" list.  I have 31 left:

Affair in Havana
Between Midnight and Dawn
Big Night, The
Calcutta
Canon City
Clay Pigeon, The
Devil Thumbs a Ride, The
Fall Guy
Fallen Sparrow, The
Guilty, The
Harder They Fall, The
Johnny Stool Pigeon
Kiss Before Dying, A
Man I Love, The
Man with My Face, The
Night Holds Terror, The
Other Woman, The
Pickup
Pretender, The
Race Street
Raging Tide, The
Scarf, The
Secret Fury, The
Shield for Murder
So Evil My Love
Sun Sets at Dawn, The
Threat, The
Two Mrs. Carrolls, The
Underworld Story, The
Voice in the Wind, A
Walk Softly, Stranger

That should be doable... unless my in-laws come for one of their extended stays, which is a possibility.  But I should have time enough to get through all 31.  And maybe time left over for more, including a possible rewatch of Kaurismaki's noir-meets-Shakespeare Hamlet Goes Business.

I agree. My starting early was due to special circumstances. I saw my workload in October and didn't think I'd go through my initial list if I didn't get a jump. So it's not a precedent. I also watched V/H/S and The Loved Ones in September, but didn't include them in Shocktober.

Right now I am planning the following (depending on availability).
Black Angel (1946)
Cry of the City
The Dark Mirror
He Walked By Night
Kiss of Death
Manhandled
Mr. Arkadian
The Naked Kiss
Odd Man Out
One Way Street
Outrage
Party Girl
The Prowler
The Reckless Moment
Ride the Pink Horse
The Shanghai Gesture
The Sniper
The Sound of Fury
Terror Street
The Thief
Thieves Highway
This Gun For Hire
Underworld U.S.A.
The Verdict (1946)
While the City Sleeps

I have two planned.  :))

Too Late for Tears
Pushover

I see somebody likes the taste of my Kool-Aid.
I will say that Pushover is great starter Noir. This may be why MartinTeller doesn't like it more. The familiar elements are too familiar for an expert like him. However, I think it has everything you can hope for, especially great dialogue.

Too Late For Tears though is much more of a Noir for people familiar with the style. I would recommend Dead Reckoning and either Scarlet Street or The Woman in the Window as a warm-up.

Martin, the two that jump out from your list are The Harder They Fall and The Two Mrs. Carrolls.

This is one of my great unexplored genres, so I'll use this opportunity to start redressing that. I'm just going to use the IMDB top 10 film-noir, switching 10 out for 11 as I've seen Night of the Hunter.

M
The Third Man
Sunset Boulevard
Strangers on a Train
Double Indemnity
The Maltese Falcon
Notorious
Touch of Evil
Witness for the Prosecution
The Big Sleep

The best marathon of the year. I have no list, so I'll just be picking at random. Oh, and I will be deciding whether or not a film should be considered a noir again, so if that bothers you............... too bad.  ;)
Masterpiece (100-91) | Classic (90-80) | Entertaining (79-69) | Mediocre (68-58) | Cinemuck (57-21) | Crap (20-0)

This is a list of noir films made from noir novels, from the book "Neon Noir" by Woody Haut. The book tries a couple of ways to position novels and films into reflections on the politics of the time; Vietnam and Reaganomics, less than satisfactorily. It then does a better job of showing how noir defines the cityscapes of America, the life breath of the city.

Point Blank (1967)- Richard Stark
Friends of Eddie Coyle (1970)- George V Higgins
Chinatown (1974)- Robert Towne
Cockfighter (1974)- Charles Willeford
The American Friend (1977)- Patricia Highsmith
Straight Time (1977)- Edward Bunker
Dog Soldier's (1978)- Robert Stone
Cutter's Way (1981)- Newton Thornberg
Hammett (1982)- Joe Gores
Prizzi's Honor (1985)- Richard Condon
Manhunter (1986)- Thomas Harris
Cop (1987)- James Ellroy
Cat Chaser (1988)- Elmore Leonard
Miami Blues (1990)- Charles Willeford
The Grifters (1990)- Jim Thompson
Dark Wind (1991)- Tony Hillerman
Casino (1995)- Nicholas Pileggi
Devil In A Blue Dress (1995)- Walter Mosley
Get Shorty (1995)- Elmore Leonard
Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead (1995)- Scott Rosenberg
LA Confidential (1997)- James Ellroy
Jackie Brown (1998)- Elmore Leonard

A couple of these break the rule, being screenplays (Chinatown & Denver), which he justifies by stating that they are so good they could be noir novels....authorial licence.

Given the appearance of films like Coyle, Cockfighter, The American Friend and Manhunter on the list, I had the feeling he was reading my mind. Point Blank, a film about the corporatisation of crime, is such an interesting film to be called "the first modern noir". Boorman's stylistic gymnastics are perfect for cinema. This is one of my favourite shots in film;

The book must be an interesting companion piece, and there are a lot of them in the series about Parker, the one man corporate liquidation operation.

I've got some planned:

This Gun for Hire
The Naked City
Kansas City Confidential
Brute Force
The Long Kiss Goodnight (Maybe this is action, not noir?)

And if I can find a decent (paid) way to watch it, then Hotel Noir
