1. The Secret of the Grain aka Couscous (2007, Abdellatif Kechiche) - The organizing storyline of the film is opening up a restaurant but it's as much about (and in a way, less about) support systems ("family").  My #24 film of all time.  But it's not ranked evaluating the film as whole.  It's ranked that high because of two scenes that are among my absolute faves.

Out of curiosity, which two scenes?  Not really spoiler-y, but just to be safe: The last dinner and the chase?

Oh good, dictations for ses!

Let's see: Have you seen The Life and Death of Col. Blimp? Out of the Powell and Pressburgers I have seen, I think this is the one that I'd pick specifically for you.

I don't know which Almodovars you have seen - what about All About my Mother?

Other films in the running: Wings of Desire, Don't Look Now, In America. Yes, I think you'd like those.

Or is there anything else from my Top 100 that strikes your fancy?

These are great blind spots being dictated. Shaping up to be a list of epic greatness.

No, not those.  Didn't really like the latter one on first viewing.  It grew on me when I realized that Spoiler-y: the night's success or failure is like life and death for Slimane.  So to actually see him physically exert himself in desperation is fitting.  My favorites scenes are 1) the family meal sequence (not just when they're having the meal but also the conversations while waiting for the meal to start) and 2) when Slimane goes to Majid's place in hopes of finding him and the couscous but instead finding Julia in a breakdown about Majid's cheating, the complicity of her in-laws, and her isolation from Slimane's family.  The potty training scene is great, too.  8)

Exactly why I wanted to do this.  :)

I remember the first scene you mention, that would have been my third guess.  Don't remember the second one.

I've seen The Limey, but not Captain Courageous.
