Senna 8.5/10
Despite the ridiculously good reviews this has gotten I've put it off because I don't much care about car racing. I still don't, but it certainly made me care about Senna, and the impact of his career both on the sport and outside it. The looming spectre of his fatal crash does hang over the film, but his career seems to be tailor made for a movie. The steady progress to victory, the struggles and setbacks to be overcome, the joys of success and frustrations of defeat. It's a fascinating subject and the film takes full advantage of it. It helps that so much raw footage is available, so we can see things like private drivers meetings, in car racing video, and candid interviews from him and others done before his death. While the film does have an elegiac tone, particularly when it comes to his impact on Brazil, it has enough sincerity that it still feels like an accurate portrait of a man and phenomenon.
