Wednesdays in the Old West
« on: December 27, 2012, 04:44:22 PM »
I've noticed that Westerns don't have any special marathons going on here, so I've decided to start a weekly movie club where each Wednesday, one film from a list compiled by who ever wants to participate will be selected, and you have until the following Wednesday to watch and write your thoughts on the film. I will pick the first film, and if you want to participate, post your name in this thread, along with a film you'd like everyone else who joins, to watch in the future weeks. If a film is picked that you've already watched, then feel free to post your thoughts along with anyone else who's watching it for the first time. As time goes along, I'll link everyone's reviews in this first post. Once your film has been selected and watched, you'll be able to suggest another film, which will be added to the queue.

Not sure I could do every Wednesday but I'm certainly interested. Westerns are a genre I need to dig into more.

Pick a film that you want others to watch.

Feel free to take how ever long it takes to watch it. I'm only using a weekly schedule as a format.

Well, I may as well start big. I've been eying Giant for a couple of weeks now. Also on instant for those who have it.

I'm in. Love Westerns, and I would want people to watch William Wyler's The Westerner (1940) featuring the wonderful double team of Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan.

I would love to participate when I can. Forty Guns isn't in my library's system :(, but I will start with Giant!

I have always wanted to see Two Mules for Sister Sara, so I will make that my pick for the series.

Antares! I was just going to post my Westerns marathon. We must be on the same wavelength. :) I too will join in here when I can and hope mine won't interfere with this great project.

Do you want to pick a film for the fifth week?

Forty Guns (1957) 59/100 - What a mess of a movie! Pretty much a glorified and extended episode of television's Virginia City, Bat Masterson or Have Gun, Will Travel. I didn't know whether to be enthralled by the looseness of the film, or snicker at the sexual innuendo that was rife in this screenplay. Unfortunately, I found myself snickering more than I was interested in this disjointed mess. It's called Forty Guns, yet the forty hired men are nothing more than a phallic symbol in the beginning of the movie and they disappear about 30 minutes in. The story is then riddled with a lot of really bad acting (The exception being Barbara Stanwyck & Barry Sullivan), bad dialog and ridiculous set pieces, like the tornado scene. For a second there, I thought I was watching the precursor to that awful film Twister, you know, at the end when Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton are caught in the middle of the tornado and they both come out without a scratch. Well, that's what happens here to. I think the only thing I found worthwhile about this story, was the ending. When Sullivan finds a shocking way to shoot Stanwyck's brother. I didn't see that coming and it was kind of ballsy.
