Not your fault, pix, you did a fine job!  Thanks for all the hard work!

Yeah, man, really. I don't know what you could have done better. (Besides, y'know, not disappearing for a couple of weeks. But I understand: there were gifts to deliver and shoes to shit in...or whatever, clogs.)

I think the big winner this Retrospots was Une homme qui dort.

Absolutely. I doubt I would have ever seen it otherwise.

If we do this again -- and I hope we do -- I really think we should shoot for a year from the 90's

Well, 1999 came in second during voting; and I believe pix floated the idea of just defaulting to that for the next round. I imagine it would be both more easily accessible and have a wider variety to choose from...

You're right, it was 1999 and then the 30s, I misremembered.

Thanks for this, pix!

Foregone conclusion for the big prize or not, 1974 was another great success - I saw a bunch of films I really liked for the first time. Looking forward to 1999 and 193?.

Indeed, it was a success for me too. Thanks to the Retrospots, I finally watched my first films from Cassavetes, Fassbinder and Bava, all of which I liked quite a bit. Thanks pix and everyone else who participated and/or worked behind the scenes!

pixote, thank you for all your hard work with these projects. I've enjoyed them both quite a bit and worry that the Retro Filmspots may not last long due to a lack of participation. (I wish I could suggest some ideas that would make more people want to join.) Perhaps it's as Martin said, in the end the cream was too creamy.

My high percentage of picking winners feels unearned since I watched about half of what I did for 1957. That might have given me the advantage since I wasn't making discoveries, but reinforcing what I already believed. Know that I'm keeping a hole in my schedule for whatever year we decide to tackle next.

I agree that the true benefit to 1974 was discovering Un homme qui dort. (I believe it was Martin who watched it for the Retrospots first.) Winner of 3 awards. Not bad for a film that's difficult to find.

I also enjoyed the debate over Gone in 60 Seconds, our most divisive selection from this year.

Me too! And the Retro Filmspots 1974 was a great experience--saw some interesting films, albeit non-winners, that would have gone unwatched otherwise.

Sent it again (in two parts by accident)

I updated the results above to include your ballot. None of the winners changed, but a few of the runners-up did (most notably, perhaps, Alice in the Cities jumping ahead of Ali: Fear Eats the Soul in the Non-English Language Film category).
