Totoro's 1930s Dictation Marathon
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:04:34 AM »
Hey guys! I am going to do a 1930s marathon! I want to watch as many films I can throughout 2013 that are from the 1930s. I will do this in the way that 1SO did his latest marathon. Everyone is allowed to PM me 3 suggestions from the 1930s, but each suggestion must be from a different year. I will rank these as I watch and review them. The one that tops the list will win no prize, just the honor of being super cool.  8)

I'm really not an expert in older movies. But perhaps I could suggest to you Alexander's Ragtime Band from 1938?

It consists almost entirely of Irving Berlin songs and is quite charming. But even more than the actual film I loved the extra material that came with it, a documentary about the star: Alice Faye: The Star Next Door. Loved the insight it gave to what old Hollywood and the studio system was like.

Here's what I wrote about it.

Oh, and in the honor of the star that my country is very proud of - Greta Garbo - it would be great to see your take on one of her movies from the 30s, such as Camille, Mata Hari or Ninotchka. Sadly I haven't seen either of them myself, so I don't know which one to recommend to you. But hopefully they're good.  :P

Sent three, then realized I didn't choose any pre-codes, which is one of my favorite time frames in film history. Hope someone else dictates a few.
Masterpiece (100-91) | Classic (90-80) | Entertaining (79-69) | Mediocre (68-58) | Cinemuck (57-21) | Crap (20-0)

Great dictations Sandy, Only Angels Have Wings in one of my favorites!!

I gave Totoro two Hitchcock films (The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes) and The Thin Man

Edited. Anyone still interested in submitting - I would like to possibly advise against 1939 films because I have lots of suggestions already for that year.
