Filmspots 2013: Eligibility Questions
« on: March 18, 2013, 04:30:49 PM »
As outlined in the FAQ, films are eligible up to a three-year period, starting with their first theatrical release, but with three limiting factors:

1) Once a film gains a wide theatrical release in the US (playing simultaneously on more than 100 or so screens), it cannot be eligible again in subsequent years.

2) Once a film debuts on DVD or TV in the US, it cannot be eligible again in subsequent years.

3) Once a film earns a Filmspot nomination, it cannot be eligible again in subsequent years.

Note: US made-for-television movies are only eligible in the year in which they first air.

(See here for the origin of these guidelines.)

I'll keep track of films with questionable eligibility below.

Is one to assume Nobody Walks would be 2013 eligible? Lena Dunham, John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby and Rosemarie DeWitt want me to watch the movie.

Would Lee Daniels' The Paperboy be eligible? Trying to figure out what is on Netflix Instant that I should be watching. Also assuming Keep the Lights On would be eligible as well.

Regardless of eligibility I'm not sure The Paperboy should be watched.

Nobody Walks, The Paperboy, and Keep the Lights On are all eligible again this year.

Yeah, I debated that ... but in the end, I figured, rules are rules, and it probably won't matter anyway.

The Silence (aka Das letzte Schweigen)

It showed in Germany in 2010, which if my recollection of eligibility rules remains fresh means 2012 would have been its final year of eligibility, however, it got its US theatrical and now DVD release this year.

Yeah, that's a tricky one. Normally we have capped eligibility at three years from original release (occasionally granting a 'red shirt' year if the first year of screenings was limited to festivals), but that's mainly just to keep films from having endless eligibility. I believe Leon Morin was definitely ruled to be ineligible when it finally hit US theaters forty plus years after original release, so the cutoff has to be somewhere. Whether it's at three years or four years doesn't really matter much to me, I guess. I'd say Silence should be eligible, but the rule should remain three years (with an asterisk).
