Sam Makes a Favorite Albums List
« on: July 16, 2013, 10:13:45 AM »
Or Sam has no idea how to write about music or whether or not any of this stuff is good but will make a fool of himself anyway for research/educational purposes.

I'm loosely stealing 1SO's structure for rebuilding his Top 100 Films, but this will be a bit more open.

Filmspotter Recommendations

I'm going to let people recommend me albums as opposed to just picking albums at random from people's top album lists. I'll start off allowing one recommendation per filmspotter, but If I get through them all, I'll open it for a second round of recommendations.

Bondo-Jupiter One [Sunshower]
ˇKeith!-XTC [Nonsuch]
AAAustin-Explosions in the Sky [Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die…]
1SO- Dead Can Dance [Into the Labyrinth]
MartinTeller-Funkadelic [Funkadelic]
Pontus-Slowdive [Souvlaki]
Sandy-Steven Curtis Chapman [Speechless]
WillMunny-Lhasa [La Llorona]
oldkid-Jars of Clay [Jars of Clay]
Junior-Belle & Sebastian [If You're Feeling Sinister]

Revisiting Favorites

Obviously, I'll be listening again to a lot of my favorites not only to figure out if they make the cut but also to figure out what order to rank them in. *insert prog rock joke here*

King Crimson [In the Court of the Crimson King]
Peter Gabriel [Car]

Important Albums

This might take me a couple of days to cull together a complete list because there's not an easy, go to place to find an ultimate list of best albums ever. I'll definitely take cues from the filmspotting top 100, but will also look elsewhere to make the list. Some of these I might have listened to before, but I'll listen to them again.

Pink Floyd [The Dark Side of the Moon]

I'm going full prog rock for you, and while I would be inclined to recommend Alan Parsons Project's Gaudi, you should have already listened to APP so I'm actually going with a more modern progish group and recommending Jupiter One's Sunshower.

Based on this, your Last.fm profile, and your love of Malick, I'm going to recommend...STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL DIE, THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL LIVE FOREVER by Explosions In The Sky.

(I think they're fellow Texans, as well.)

Thanks for the recommendations so far! I'll wait till this evening to start listing the albums.

Also, feel free to recommend best album lists I should be looking at to make the Important Albums section. I've glanced at a couple but I honestly have no idea which lists are better than others. I assume it's all subjective at some level.

Don't worry, next round, I'll be sure to suggest your Tuvan-throat-singing-and-blast-beats tribute to Crystal Gayle.

Love that album.

Sam, with pleasure note that you have listened to the Mary Onettes. A fairly small Swedish band originating from the same city as me. Very fun. And also, I must say that I like your posts and reviews.

I struggled a bit with my recommendation, but I'll go for Souvlaki by the British shoegaze band Slowdive.
