17/50

The list reads in part like a "to avoid" reminder sheet, in part a "wish I hadn't" sheet and in part a "well yeah of course" sheet.

Which ones would fall into the former two categories ? Most of those I have watched are great, and none are deserve to be quite that reviled.

The ones where I felt I had my time-wasted ("reviled" is too strong, it's up to me whether I watched the film, so "I hate the film" sounds to me like I enjoy stabbing myself in the eye- I could just turn it off and forget about it);

Breathless
In The Mood For Love
Pierrot le fou

, which is where my opinion about Godard and WKW comes from

One that was alright but nothing special- Pather Panchali

There are 21 that I think are kind of obvious.

There are 24 I can't be bothered with. Reviews of them go towards calling them "essential" or "admirable" neither of which interests me.

...and I can't remember City Lights but I know I've seen it. Chaplin used to be like Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry on the BBC, when I was growing up.

I get the lack of response to Godard's Nouvelle Vague stuff.

It is a boring list. 18 holes remains to plug. Close-Up and Stalker are among those titles it would be easy to talk me in to see.

Love Smirnoff's remark:

If you've seen the criterion cover art for JD, then you've seen 90% of the visuals of the movie.

45  :D :D :D

Lots of hate for the list in this thread lol. Oh well. I'm actually an advocate for both the list and a new canonical list coming from somewhere that can compete for eyes from the cinema elite. Maybe a more populist version of the canon, too(?). I'd probably hate that list, though.
