De Niro and Scorsese grew to epic heights together. A true collaboration with each pushing the other to be better. By the time DiCaprio came along Scorsese was a master director guiding Leo, but I can't point to a single thing Leo gave back except for box office clout, the ability to finance more expensive projects.

I wish I'd seen more of this in real time. Still, with some imagination it seems absolutely spot on.

Which actor-director combo of modern day has such a symbiotic relationship?

Hawke-Linklater and Pegg-Wright come to mind.

It's not a generational thing, he was just better then. I'm not denigrating his recent work, up to and including The Silence, which I found very moving, but he was just on fire in the first decade or so like so many artists. Dylan's done some fantastic work in the last 20 years but few argue it's actually better than what he made his reputation(s) with.

So this poll is litterally me against everyone else at the moment. Neat.

I suspect you could eliminate any two DeNiro movies from memory and existence and he would still win this poll. Probably wouldn't even sway many to the Leo side.
