I was thinking about something here. Feel free to shoot it down if it's too crazy, pix.

The question of repeated movies from the regular ratings project is an interesting one. Many of these will be crossovers, I think, and there's gotta be some reason to go back and revisit those movies we've already rated. So, how about two ratings for each movie, one for the quality of the film and one for the scariness. That way we could have some crowd-sourced list of scary movies that aren't really scary for those of us that don't particularly like the things that go bump in the night and a way of finding out what is the scariest thing we've seen as a community. This would involve probably a spreadsheet which has two columns, one for quality and one for scary factor. Too much work? Not enough payoff? Pick it apart!

Maybe a straight 5 category system.

5 - Terrifying
4 - Really scary
3 - scary
2 - moments of scariness
1 - not at all scary

For starters, we'll just rate them like any other film in the Ratings Project; and then we'll probably take the ones with a certain minimum average (7.00 or 7.50, if enough score that highly) and rate them as "horror" movies to generate to final Top 100 list.

Salem's Lot - Overrated and mostly dull * *
Deliverance - Best of this list. Didn't consider it horror, but yeah, it pretty much defines Survival Horror. * * *
1408 - Horrible. Uninteresting at first and then it just gets worse. John Cusack needs people to act off his indifference * 1/2
Pet Sematary - Kind of okay, but also kind of silly. * * 1/2
The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - Laughable at first, ultimately detestable. * 1/2
The Crazies (2010) - I barely remember it and I watched it last year * *
The People under the Stairs - Laughable, but in a fun way. Not as good as Shocker for laughable badness. *
The Amityville Horror - Dated. Bad. And the remake is equally horrible. * 1/2
When a Stranger Calls - Great beginning and then very by the book. Same for the sequel. * *
Silent Night, Bloody Night - Invalidates the entire list. 1/2

Just about 500 titles have been nominated to date,

Can I cheat and ask if you have that consolidated list of 500?

I just placed them in terms of overall favourite as opposed to perceived spookiness. I figured I'd order them in what I would want to watch most as opposed to most likely to make me shriek. Some stuff that is borderline horror genre but I needed some better films on my list  :P

Aliens
Young Frankenstein
Let The Right One In
Jaws
Screamers
Predator
The Silence of the Lambs
Alien
28 Days Later
Take Shelter
Sunshine
The Skin I Live In
Black Swan
The Terminator
Shaun of The Dead
I Saw The Devil
Frankenstein
The Thing
King Kong
Gremlins 2
The Cabin in The Woods
Se7en
Buried
Psycho
The Shining
28 Weeks Later
Tremors
Red State
The Evil Dead
They Live
Bubba Ho-Tep
Shutter Island
The Blair Witch Project
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
The Exorcist
Army of Darkness
Dawn of the Dead(2004)
Black Death
I Am Legend
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
Species
The Devils Advocate

When Devils Advocate makes it onto a list that's a sign you've run out of films. Other more standard/classic stuff like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street , etc. didn't make it onto the list as I don't know that I've ever finished one as I get bored with them pretty quick. Everyone seems to have their own definition of some of the more fringe choices, Jurassic Park made it onto a few lists and is my favourite movie though it didn't make it onto mine. I can certainly see the case being made for it but never really thought of it as horror.

Silent Night, Bloody Night - Invalidates the entire list. 1/2

Not be confused with Silent Night, Deadly Night which gave us This spectacular scene.

I'm rather fond of The People Under the Stairs.  It is so ridiculous and over the top that I am almost forced to enjoy it.  But not a top 100 for me (or maybe even 200).

The rest of them, with the exception of Deliverance, are all pretty bland.  The Hills Have Eyes remake has a few moments but the rest could probably be skipped.
