I think the majority or all of the first season is directed by Fukunaga, which most excites me. I was under the impression that he was the creator as well, but apparently I am wrong there.

And yes, apparently all eight episodes are directed by Fukunaga and written by Nic Pizzolatto.

The writer of the series, Nic Pizzolatto, answers this concern on pg 2 of
this interview when asked: How did you try to approach this so that it didn't just feel like a copy of a copy of 16 other things?

yes, but after watching its first episode I'd say TD has nothing to do with them: very original treatment, more a psychology thing than a whodunit, at the same time the first episode left a lot of questions - about what happened in 1995, about what happened in 2012, who are these guys? what happened between them? - I can't wait to watch the next one.
I gather we have only one writer and only one director here, is it a first time?
