Of the shows you watched, who was the best character (not necessarily on the best show)?  Why?

I've really enjoyed Jimmy Smits character Nero since he was introduced on Sons, and I thought this was his most interesting season yet. They gave him a lot of time to develop and it's been worth it. I like that they added Peter Weller to the cast as well. That show has fantastic casting in general.

I REALLY enjoyed the no-bullshit evolution of Carol's character in Walking Dead this last season.

Top 3:

3. Rebel Alley (Arrested Development): Isla Fisher's character had to jump head first into the madness. Rebel fit with the entire family - mostly bouncing between the Bluth men and liking them most when they're not interested in her - as if she had been there the whole time.

2. DeBrie Bardeaux (Arrested Development): Maria Bamford operated on the more extreme end of this series, mostly mixing it up with Tobias. DeBrie is a sad character, but she’s the perfect match for Tobias, who is naive enough to see only the good in her.

1. Crazy Eyes (Orange is the New Black): No other actor blew through TV Land with a more off-the-wall, fully formed original creation as Uzo Aduba playing Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren. Many times I would google the actress to see what she really looked like. It was a total package transformation, well beyond the physical appearance. CE was one of the most vulnerable, needy characters on TV, until… you know… you slighted her. Every emotion came at you unfiltered and Crazy Eyes can switch between extreme ones without any transition time.

The best character on TV continues to be Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones. Second place goes to everybody else on the show.

Also great this year:

Nick Miller from New Girl. He's the silly person I'm probably closest to being like on the show. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham from Hannibal. Two intensely fascinating characters on the best new show of 2013.

I'll also second all of 1SO's well argued choices.

Any of the wonderfully well-realized people on Orange is the New Black.
