With "Small Axe", McQueen has transformed (for me) from a one-hit wonder to a talent to watch out for. It's quite possible I misjudged his earlier work.

The score to 12 Years a Slave almost made me hate it, but by film's end I was simply indifferent. McQueen's staging and handling of space really bothers me.  It's hard to articulate, but it's sort of the difference between composing a shot and working through the logic of a scene. His experiments in duration are admirable though.
