The idea behind the rules is to be as inclusive as possible, both in terms of films and also Filmspotters. Even though we’re a US-based forum, we have a very intentional makeup, so adhering purely to US release dates always seemed a bit limiting. And even in the US, having a limited year-end release in NY/LA also seems a bit ... exclusive. For example, I saw Weathering with You in the theaters in 2019, but few other Filmspotters had that opportunity. Same with Capernaum in 2018. And on the flip-side, I’m excited to consider Deerskin as a 2020 film, even though many Filmspotters saw it in 2019.

That said, with a respective project like a “90s Bracket”, I’ve always been in favor of following IMDb dates, for simplicity. (With some exceptions.)

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

What pixote said, but for this project since it is based on the existing nominations, simply gets dated by "what year was it nominated" which seems simple enough. It becomes a second order derivative to relitigate the policies behind the nominations.

Best Editing
Best Sound
Best Score
Best Soundtrack
Best Cinematography
Best Art Direction
Best Visual Effects
Best Scene (Dramatic)
Best Scene (Comedic)
Best Shot
Best Line

No film nominated for these categories without a major or "whole film" nomination should be included if films in Animated, Documentary and Non-English aren't included I'd say. I just don't get the logic of including Macgruber and excluding BPM.

A. I didn't take calculus.
B. There are simpler ways.
C. It's always worth revisiting the purpose of any rule.

So now I know what the deal is, it makes sense, thankyouverymuch.

A question for the group as I build the Letterboxd list.

I'm putting Animated and Documentary aside for special recognition and removing Overlooked and Surprise.
With Non-English Language Film, should I:

A) Remove that category too?
B) Include those titles?
C) Only include films that either won or are nominated in other categories?

Of the 50 nominees, 16 were nominated in only this Category.
Winners that were only nominated for Non-English Language Film:
BPM (Beats Per Minute)
The Wolf House
The Hunt

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya would be eliminated even though it won Non-English Language and Animated.

My opinion: Non-English titles should be included, mixed with the rest of the films.

Second the inclusion of Non-English titles.

Killer Style. There's never a bad time to watch Deerskin.
