Star Ratings Statistics
« on: January 28, 2014, 05:24:18 PM »
I did some really quick number crunching on the Filmspotting Podcast ratings pages, where the Hosts give films a star rating out of 5. I thought I'd share the results for anyone that was curious.

Number of ratings given: around 1253 Keep in mind there's usually at least 2 people rating each movie... so the total number of movies rated is half of that number or less.

Number of times a 1 star rating was given: 40
Number of times a 2 star rating was given: 218
Number of times a 3 star rating was given: 379
Number of times a 4 star rating was given: 495
Number of times a 5 star rating was given: 121

The Hit List (films BOTH hosts gave 5 stars):
Hustle & Flow
A History of Violence
Rio Bravo
Capote
Brokeback Mountain
Vertigo
Brick
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Grave of the Fireflies
Black Snake Moan
Sunrise
The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country For Old Men
The Apartment
The Red Shoes
Taxi Driver
Drive
2001: A Space Odyssey

The **** List (films BOTH hosts gave 1 star):
The Ring Two
The Black Dahlia
Hounddog

Did you count guest hosts as well?  What did you do with the - and + ratings?  Count them?  If so, how did you figure those as stars?

I've seen two of the 1-Star films and agree 100%.

Does anyone else see Black Snake Moan as the odd man out from The Hit List?

My method was pretty crude. I just opened the source code for the pages containing the ratings, copied it into notepad+, stripped out the extraneous data, and then did a ctrl+f to look up /star1.jpg, /2stars.jpg etc. Incidentally notepad+ tells you how many occurences of that query there are, thus a rough result. :)

Films that were rated 2.5 stars, or any 1/2 star variation, were rounded down.

So because I did it this way it included every rating by any and every host. I ignored the - and + ratings completely, for simplicity.

For the Hit and **** lists I just manually skimmed through the ratings.

From his method as described, he's used all the hosts, including guest (even one-time) hosts.

Over 100 films received + and - ratings so those were not included.

I've been listening to old episodes and I just got to the ones about Black Snake Moan and A History Of Violence and I don't recall both hosts liking it.

Most definitely.

It is not as universally popular, but I agree with the rating, so no.

Whether or not the films are as good as the rating I think it's still neat to see just which films got them both fully on board.
