That's the only song I listened to, Tomorrow Man.

The pressure to get images organized is what keeps me out of that thread.

Introductory annotations

Believe the Black Messiah hype, people. D’Angelo has returned and his gifts are pure and for always. Three years in a row now somebody has emerged as a contender as the Purple One’s true heir - Blood Orange last year, Frank Ocean the year before that, and now D’Angelo. Ironically Prince himself released two records this year. Despite a stellar SNL performance, neither of his new records registered with me much.

This was not a particularly strong Top 40 year for me. I give her due propers for the irresistible “Shake It Off” but having heard the rest of 1989, I remain a TayTay agnostic. In other Top 40 happenings, Katy Perry followed up the super terrific Teenage Dream with a slate of hapless hooks this year, and though Nicki Minaj continues to be a skilled MC and wondrous cartoon character, The Pinkprint was largely unlistenable to my ears. I couldn’t muster the energy to bother with Ariana Grande or Iggy Azalea beyond a few unappealing seconds.

Though Top 40 may have slumped in 2014, it is nice to see a handful of bonafide rock songs get on my list. Though I suppose my strategy of largely only seeking out bands derivative of Exile-era Stones and pre-fame REM and Replacements is pretty lazy, but I’m cool like that.

My laziness sort of segues into the dad rock question. At this point, while deliberating over The War on Drugs, both fans and haters alike have referenced Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Lindsey Buckingham, Don Henley, Paul Simon, John Cougar Mellencamp, Mark Knopfler, and just about every other male recording artist to get FM (or later light rock) play in the 1970s and 80s. I guess for me, with the exception of Henley, none of those are dirty words, so take a pill, Mark Kozelek. I’m just happy to hear indie rock bands try guitar sounds that aren’t so angular.

It’s interesting that the two sex jams of the year took such divergent paths to success. Jessie Ware’s “Tough Love” was at first a hard sell for me, the restraint at first seemed too dignified and too bordering on something like Sarah McLachlan. But upon repeated listens what at first felt stately, just revealed itself as sad and lusty. FKA Twigs’s “Two Weeks”, on the other hand, achieves its magic through rapturous aggression. It’s new heights in a sex jam being wonderfully drugged out, and a little scary.
