@noff. I'm not disagreeing with your opinion on older stuff. I just feel a little disappointed for you that it puts a barrier between you and a vast amount of media.

It has it's pros and cons. Pro, I have less stuff to watch. Con, I have less stuff to watch. :))

You would find the effects in the original Robocop clunky, no doubt. The new one is as bright and shiny as you would expect. When the large robots appear it certainly is an improvement on the first one. The original big ED scenes are brilliant (you must have heard of the "you have ten seconds to comply" scene) but those effects are definitely ropey. It's just Verhoeven's nihilism really works with this story.

You touch on something that IS a selling point, or can be. Modern actioners can be crippled by an over-reliance on CG for every little task. Sometimes the old ways are still the best ways. I don't know if Robocop would have any examples that bear that out, but that's something I would enjoy finding.

Verhoeven is hit and miss for me, but you say this is a good fit for him and I have no reason to suspect otherwise.

This is probably a better way in for me than approaching it on a comparative basis. We'll see.

It was totally a ruse, thought some pokes at the king might invite a battle royal(e). Robocop is deliciously old school, the kind you can taste and slop around in. Do you like The Fly? That's my nearest comparison point, really. A wonderful blend of sci-fi ideas and corporeal mess.

I do love The Fly, but mainly because I'm a sap and the ending makes me emotional. :)

I thought it would be easier just to link to the "10 seconds to comply" scene but someone's doing a good job of keeping it off youtube. However, strangely, the full film is linked to all over the place!

I like your original plan, because I liked the new film so much. The old one may actually be more interesting by comparison, and it's unusual for me to hold that opinion.
