Number of films in top 100:

Hitchcock - 2
Kubrick - 2

Number of films rated above 80:

Hitchcock - 13
Kubrick - 6

% of all films seen rated above 80:

Hitchcock - 34.2%
Kubrick - 37.5%

Number of films rated below 60:

Hitchcock - 6
Kubrick - 3

% of all films seen rated below 60:

Hitchcock - 15.8%
Kubrick - 18.7%

It's a tough call.  In terms of consistent quality of output, Kubrick seems to have the edge (and his only truly "weak" output is from his earliest work).  But I'm going with Hitchcock, whose overall career gives you slightly more bang for your buck.

Quality is a given with both. Therefore, Hitch wins by quantity.

The variety of Kubricks films gives him the edge for me.

Kubrick. His ideas and themes are cooler to me.

I like Kubrick but I love Hitchcock, easy choice for me.

Kubrick all the way!

For me I think Hitchcock's numbers work against him as I can think of far more "meh" films from him than from Kubrick. But even comparing the best of each against each other I'd have to pick Kubrick as more essential for myself.

A ranking of their most notable films from this website (which I refer to for film rankings & charts more than any other website)

Hitchcock [H] Kubrick (K)

(borrowed 1SO's MartinTeller's color-categorization for this)

The number in parenthesis is their overall ranking in the site's film charts (typically, a film in the Top 500 is an excellent film. Anything within the Top 1500 is considered a great one.)

Ranking of their most notable films:

01. (K) 2001: A Space Odyssey (#4)
02. (K) A Clockwork Orange (#9)
03. [H] Psycho (#15)
04. (K) The Shining (#16)
05. (K) Dr. Strangelove (#20)
06. [H] Vertigo (#31)
07. [H] Rear Window (#34)
08. (K) Paths of Glory (#56)
09. [H] North by Northwest (#76)
10. (K) Full Metal Jacket (#86)
11. (K) Barry Lyndon (#90)

12. [H] Rebecca (#283)
13. [H] Rope (#319)
14. [H] Strangers on a Train (#346)
15. [H] Dial M for Murder (#370)
16. (K) The Killing (#382)
17. [H] Notorious (#442)

18. [H] Shadow of a Doubt (#614)
19. (K) Eyes Wide Shut (#746)

20. [H] The Birds (#794)
21. [H] The 39 Steps (#956)

22. [H] The Lady Vanishes (#1148)
23. [H] Frenzy (#1212)
24. (K) Lolita (#1293)

So in that 1st tier, Kubrick has seven and Hitchcock has four. Kubrick also has 4 of the Top 5.

Hitchcock dominates the 2nd tier though and pretty much everything until the bottom of the list.

Also, outside of the Kubrick's films listed, he only has Spartacus and Killer's Kiss, which are arguably his lesser works. Hitchcock on the other hand, still has a lot of other well regarded films.

So in terms of quality, it seems Kubrick has it by being a tad more outstanding than Hitchcock. In terms of quantity of quality films, Hitchcock has so much though.

Personally, I've seen a lot of their films and I voted Hitchcock, but this thread has made me want to do a marathon of their films for comparison.

I thought the numbers would just be very interesting.

I don't pay much mind to rankings determined by votes on websites.  Although that list does seem a bit better than the IMDb top 250.
