Fargo on FX
« on: March 19, 2014, 03:07:29 AM »
Copied the following from show description here.

The Coens acted as producers of the new ten-episode TV series, which was developed by screenwriter Noah Hawley (Bones),and stars Martin Freeman as Lester Nygaard, a man who has his life drastically changed when he encounters a mysterious man who arrives in town.  Billy Bob Thornton, a Coen brothers favourite, plays Lorne Malvo, a boastful and manipulative crook who FBI agents Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are obsessed with tracking down.

In the FX spin-off, Freeman as Nygaard plays a henpecked insurance salesman who is based loosely on the Macy role. The series also stars Oliver Platt (The Big C) and Bob Odenkirk (‘Better Call Saul’ in Breaking Bad), Kate Walsh (Greys Anatomy), and tom Hank's son Colin Hanks (Mad Men, Orange County and Parkland). The dark humour and Midwest setting remains, but the series has an entirely new plot. It was filmed in Canada and premiers in the US on April 15.

Yes, very interested. Seems to be in a similar vein as the original film.

Starts tonight on FX.

From a review online:

Hawley (who, like Nic Pizzolatto on "True Detective," is credited with writing all the episodes) lays out a tangled story that has room for plenty of cops (including Bob Odenkirk, productively filling the time between "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul"), a pair of out-of-town killers (Adam Goldberg and Russell Harvard), a smug supermarket mogul (Oliver Platt), a dim physical trainer (Glenn Howerton from "Always Sunny"), a bitter mob wife (a lively, funny Kate Walsh), Molly's retired cop father Lou (Keith Carradine) and Gus's clever daughter Greta (Joey King), among others. It never feels overstuffed or hard to follow, but rather like a fully-realized universe that we'll need 10 hours(**) to properly explore.

I thought the first ep was absolutely incredible. Martin Freeman's performance was just magnificent. Didn't feel a false note anywhere in that. "Aw jeez. Aw jeez."

Really great first episode. Weird to see Freeman with an American accent, but he's great as usual in the part.

Wow. Was not expecting that accent out of him.

I like it. Some nice little visual nods to the film, but nothing overboard.

I'm curious about where it's all gonna go. Although between this and Hannibal, my parents are starting to worry about me.

Loved the scene towards the end of episode three with Molly and Gus at the diner. Fantastic, and not something that you usually see on TV, much less in these kinds of shows.

Just saw this week's episode. Loved the reference to the film (the snow scraper is apparently hanging in Oliver Platt's office and can be seen much more easily in episode 3).
