Loved him in Gosford Park. And then there's always Children of Men, I suppose.

Episode 2 wasn't as strong as the pilot. Though I love the style and tone, and especially the verve of the surgery scenes, I'm not connecting to the characters very much. The female characters seem especially underwritten - the whole conversation with Nurse Bono's Daughter at the end was almost entirely one-sided. And I really hope Dr. Edwards becomes more of a foil/rival/partner with Thackery sooner rather than later.

On a very minor note, I can't help but see Keifer Sutherland from Dark City in every seen with Herman Barrow, the hospital administrator.

Preview the soundtrack on iTunes and you'll wish you had it even more. Though there are other ways of seeing it...

I know! Such stellar work. There have been some great interviews where Martinez mentions how Soderbergh wanted every aspect of the show to be appropriate to the period, except for the music. It works so well.

Three episodes in and aside from the production values I'm starting to lose interest. Owens is certainly a good actor, but his character is just a bad-boy doctor cliche. I can't stand Barrow's storyline. Nurse Bono's Daughter is again only there to look doe-eyed at Owen's character. Edwards story is the only thing that's still grabbing me. The fight at the end was outstanding.

I find it very irritating how fake the bodies they're operating on look.

I was thinking that about the baby (in the throes of spasms from meningitis) this episode, too. Still, the scene was quite effectively horrifying. I was surprised it was, given how conscious I was of the fake baby. I do appreciate the use of models, rather than CG - and if a story and the context is good enough, it all works.

Random and non-essential question:
Sister Harriet said in this episode, "Punctuality is the politeness of cadence."  She meant, "Punctuality is the cadence of politeness," right?  (If not, what does, "Punctuality is the politeness of cadence" mean?)

I feel like the last two or three episodes have been much better in terms of writing. Or maybe it's just that there hasn't been as much of Herman Barrows, who to me is the least compelling character on the show. At this point, where pretty much all the plots have me invested and the execution is still kind of hypnotic, I'm really getting into the show.
