The Past
* * 1/2

I'm so conflicted about Farhadi because he's an excellent screenwriter. In terms of character depth and revealing things in a natural way, he's probably one of the best working today. However, I find his screenplays largely uncinematic. I spent most of The Past thinking it was his direction, but I don't know what you could do to the material without coming off as unnecessarily flashy. I had this problem with the beginning of A Separation (after the opening scene). It was when the story became a legal thriller that I found myself fully engaged. Here, there are great and lovely actors to watch, and there's a lot of conflict (almost too much by then end), but it never really grabbed me.

A Separation (A)
The Salesman (B+)
The Past (C)

Kind of befuddled by the bizarre backlash directed at THE SALESMAN by core cinephiles. I need to finish his filmography. I'm sure now that THE PAST was just a hiccup.

Farhadi steals

Bookmarked it. Lots of words, but I'm interested. I feel like his films are structurally repetitious, so I'm kind of wondering if his original idea that led to so many other films is what he stole.
