  • Hey.
Alright it's that time of the month.

Send your nominations in for FS Book Discussion #2 if you are inclined to join.

Rules:
  • You may nominate 1-2 books.
  • You may NOT nominate any books in the following genres:
    • Mystery
NOTE: Rule #2 is due to prior suggestion about "banning" genres that we read for two rounds so as not to have some variety in the books that we read.

WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin - (pub. 1924; 226 pgs; science fiction) - heisenbergman

I guess I'll put up two sci-fi books for this round:

OLD MAN'S WAR by John Scalzi - (pub. 2005; 314 pgs; science fiction)
WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin - (pub. 1924; 226 pgs; science fiction)

Speaker of the Dead by Orson Scott Card - (pub. 1994; 382 pgs; science fiction)
Stay: A History of Suicide and the Philosophies Against It by Jennifer Michael Hecht - (pub. 2013; 280 pgs; non-fiction)

I don't know if it is weird to nominate the not-first book in a series because it would in theory force people who haven't read the first to read two books. On the other hand, Ender's Game is a pretty "essential" kind of book (says a person who read it a year ago).

^ I just finished Ender's Game a few weeks ago :P

(although I've heard it said that there's something to be said about reading Ender's Shadow before Speaker for the Dead)

Lock In - John Scalzi (published 2014, 336pgs, sci-fi)
The Embedding - Ian Watson (published 1989, 196pgs, sci-fi)

All I know about the first is that Wil Wheaton does one of the two available audiobooks, which attracted me because I thought his reading of Scalzi's Fuzzy Nation was just terrific.

The second just sounded bonkers and came up when I searched other sci-fi I enjoyed.

Just thinking that if we keep the genre exclusion rule and we end up picking a sci-fi, there's gonna be a very different nomination slate the following month. ;D

I want to re-nominate East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
