Junior, I wondered if you'd include the longer cut of F&A, which was a TV Miniseries. (As is No Direction Home.) I decided not to do that with mine which eliminated Scenes From a Marriage, John Adams and Martin Scorsese's 2 Journey Through Cinema films.

Sam, when it comes to extended editions, I prefer The Two Towers. You could argue making all of Lord of the Rings an entry, much like I did with The Human Condition, though each of those films is also over 3 hours.

Ok, Mr. Rules Man. But that's on you! I don't play by the rules! I'm the forum bad boy. I'll put a miniseries on the list and say screw to anybody who tells me different. Bad to the bone.  8)

Also, to be fair, the Fellowship theatrical cut is 2 mins under 3 hours. So, rules that. This is why I picked RotK.

Red Beard

Didn't realize that was over the 3 hour mark, that one should be on my list.

Been waiting for your list, since I know you top me when it comes to apprehension towards long movies. How nice that you're the one with ties to put 8 films in your Top 5. I more expected you to put in a series like Orphan Black to fill out your list. And I didn't think about Wiseman. He was bound to come up too.

If I cheated with mini-series or TV shows I could have done an entirely different list, which would be appropriate because that's an entirely different list.  :D

1. Fanny & Alexander (312)
2. Seven Samurai (207)
3. Red Beard (185)
4. As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (320)
5. Malcolm X (202)

HM: Satantango (450), Inland Empire (180), War and Peace (427), Napoleon (240), Kwaidan (183), Love Exposure (237), Shoah (566), Lawrence of Arabia (216), The Falls (195), The Saga of Gosta Berling (183), Awaara (193)

My five are all in my top 100.  Satantango I took off my top 100 last year, but only because I haven't set aside enough time to rewatch it.  I left off Scenes from a Marriage because I prefer the theatrical cut.  And FWIW, the theatrical cut of F&A still counts, it's 188 minutes.

Who was it that posted that Seven Samurai was the best use of 3 hours? This thread is supporting that statement.

Pretty sure that wasn't me:

"While I did enjoy the film throughout its duration, I felt all 3 and a half hours of said length. It's a massive movie about a little event. Often that kind of grand focus on a small scale allows us to treat the mundane as if it were the biggest thing in the world. That doesn't exactly happen here, but Kurosawa does invest a lot of time into the everyday as the titular force prepares the farmers that have hired them to protect their village from the nefarious bandits that roam the countryside looking for things to steal and women to rape."

1. Eros + Massacre (Yoshida)

I would argue that Yoshida makes the best use of every second, therefore Yoshida makes the best use of 3 hours. But here's some more fun stuff...

2. The Traveling Players (Angelopoulos)
3. The Falls (Greenaway)
4. Celine and Julie Go Boating (Rivette)
5. I Am Twenty (Khutsiev)

From my Top 100:
La belle noiseuse  (Jacques Rivette, 1991)  (238min)
Edvard Munch  (Peter Watkins, 1974)  (210min)
Celine and Julie Go Boating  (Jacques Rivette, 1974)  (193min)
Regular Lovers  (Philippe Garrel, 2005)  (183min)
World on a Wire  (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1973)  (212min)

Also in my Top 100, but technically a mini series (although shown theatrically):
Heimat II: A Chronicle of a Generation  (Edgar Reitz, 1992)
