Film Haikus
« on: April 13, 2015, 07:50:47 PM »
Hi guys! These are my Top 25 films of 2014 in haiku form. I'm also posting the link to the entry on my blog. Try to guess as many of these as you can in the comments. We're going to read the Top Ten of whoever guesses the most right, when we do our Top Ten podcast in a few weeks. Feel free to leave your own film haikus!

P.S. I hope this is the right place for this kind of post. If not, let me know, and I'll help it find its proper home. :)

P.S.S. Okay, one of these is actually a handful of episodes from a television show. But, as they are all in sequence and very much meant to be seen as parts of a complete film, I've included them.

#25:
Standup keeps crashing
Film’s party. A great comic
Makes his best work yet.

#24:
Great filmmaking yarn.
Cult of personality's
An understatement.

#23:
Hand-carved history.
Sad, expressive diorama
Of despotism.

#22:
It’s not long-winded.
Just too aghast to tell its
“Hero” to shut up.

#21:
Civics with a soul.
I remove my skeptic’s hat.
A good man’s walking.

#20:
Hagiography?
Too lovingly critical.
Clear-eyed, like he was.

#19:
Even good choices
Cannot protect us from change.
Drive out to meet it.

#18:
The American Dream
Is a useful hypocrisy.
Flogged by our bootstraps.

#17
Dredges up buried
Hatred until the hateful
Are buried with it.

#16:
Gazes serenely
And curiously at Time.
Time gazes right back.

#15:
Creativity
And constraint kiss and make up.
I can’t stop laughing!

#14:
Woody’s NYC
Is rekindled and reborn,
With less cynicism.

#13:
Tense and immediate.
The best spy movie ever.
It's bigger than film.

#12:
Great movie star makes
Neorealism sing.
We need each other.

#11:
The literary
World rendered with acid wit
And great tenderness.

#10:
Female friendship and
Punk in 80’s Sweden make
A darling “CINECAST! you”.

#9:
Unspeakably cool!
To live forever is to
Become a hipster.

#8:
Icy and tender.
Kubrick just made Predator
And it's beautiful.

#7:
Perfectionism
Captured through sound and acting.
Ambition deafens.

#6:
An old fairytale.
Psychorealistic myth.
Humane and gutting.

#5:
The family unit
Climbs naked and embarrassed
From an avalanche.

#4:
A perfect horror,
Not because it stabs and shrieks,
But because it weeps.

# 3:
A period piece
With insight and character
Beneath each brushstroke.

#2:
Once upon a time
A great many souls were lost.
And so I create.

#1:
Loves narrative,
Yet sees it for what it is.
All just passing time.

25. Top Five
23. The Missing Picture
22. Listen Up Phillip - could also be #11, but this Haiku fits better.
19. Ida
15. The Lego Movie
13. Citizenfour
12. The Trip to Italy - This probably isn't right, it's probably Two Days, One Night but the film speaks to me this way.
11. Life Itself
10. We Are the Best
9. The Grand Budapest Hotel
8. Under the Skin - my favorite Haiku of the 25
7. Whiplash
5. Force Majeure
4. Gone Girl

Okay, I didn't want to reply too quickly, for fear of giving away any answers. I'll just say that 1SO did quite well. In a few days, I'll look at my replies here and on Facebook and let you know who won. And tell you all the answers. :)
