pix, how deep do your ratings go? I know the American school system uses F as the worst grade, do you do the same?

F is on the scale (right after D; no D- or E) but remains theoretical, more rare than an A+. The longer I go without awarding one, the more negative prestige (in my head) seems attached to it. I've come close a few times, but I always seem to able to find something at least a little redemptive in most films. And I rationalize that, if the film were truly an F, I probably wouldn't have finished it and thus not graded it. It's all so complicated.

Perhaps the active presence of Fs in my ratings is thus explained because I don't make completion a necessary component of rating.

Which begs the second question: How come there is no E in the American grading system (and the British too, I suppose)?

Can you think of a couple of movies you have rated so?

I always thought E was skipped to avoid overlap with the other grading system of E(xcellent), S(atisfactory), N(eeds improvement), U(nsatisfactory). Plus, eailure isn't a word.

By that logic, surely the O, E, A, P, D and T grading system must have been the one on their minds?

It was a remallio fusis curse (re-routing curse), very powerful, only a few can cast it.

A, B, C and D are all considered (through high school) a passing grade.  F is separated from the others, and is short for "Fail".   So there are four "grades" and a "fail".

There used to be some grade systems that used E as fail instead of F, and there are some systems that use a "U" (unsatisfactory) or an "N" (non-passing) for the same meaning.  E is no longer used.
