Depends on what you mean by daunting. Do you mean because of their reputation in film history - Casablanca, Citizen Kane - or the difficulty of capturing the vision of a singular filmmaker - Last Year at Marienbad, 2001, 8 1/2? I think any successful movie would be daunting to remake. If the crew behind Skyfall and Spectre said they were going to remake Goldfinger next, that would be a pretty daunting task though there's certainly room for modern improvement.

A Hard Day's Night

Easy to remake. It's called Spice World and it is amazing.

The Wizard of Oz. I know there's the Oz movie from a few years ago but I think that's a different perspective. An outright remake of the original story would be my #1.

When Hollywood inevitably reboots the LOTR trilogy into a 9 movie series there will probably be a 50/50 chance the director will be impaled or otherwise maimed by the original films' fans, so I vote for that. Also, those sound like hard movies to make.

And before you ask, yes, I'll go watch all of them.

Most daunting? I would simply say it would have to be the most well respected movies that are in the same language that haven't already had a notable "true" remake.

I guess here my list would be something like:

1) Citizen Kane
2) Casablanca
3) The Godfather
4) Singin' in the Rain
5) Vertigo
