Of course there isn't! Not that I know anyway. I just use those terms to simplify things  for myself. It's up to you if you think it is an oversimplification. Maybe most movies made for money in some sort of way but I still think the heart of The Turin Horse is very different from that of Spielberg's War Horse.

Why, because War Horse is good? Really good?

No it's not. It's just not.

Really want to catch up with Knife in the Water and Cul-de-sac.

You should, they're both excellent. They're both in my Top 5 or 4 Polanskis.

Wait, you haven't seen Terminator 2? Though Abyss might be the best for those who don't think they'd like something from Cameron because it's distinctive from the more action spectacle bent of the others.

That's right Bondo, T2 is a blind spot! Maybe the Top 100 Club will give me an opportunity to rectify that.

As someone who actively dislikes Cameron I can only second this. T2 is by far his best and miles beyond everything else he has done.

Pure gut on these. Multiple films on my top 100 gets you an automatic 10, other tens are based on feeling and vibe. Don't really care about bad movies unless they're really bad (looking at you, George Lucas).
Lucas is the best example of a Director who may have made a Top 100 film but is not highly regarded as a Director.

Quite. I love SW but Lucas is simply put a terrible director to the core.

I think my formula is going to be something like this:

Base = Average Rating of Five Best Movies
Penalty = 0.5 times the number of movies under five that I haven't seen
Bonus = 0.5 0.1 times the remaining movies I'm truly eager to see + 0.25 0.05 times the movies I'm truly eager to revisit

Now I just need to find time to implement this. I'll probably have to tweak things so that 10.0 is a possible rating.

pixote

Now this is the kind of math that sends butterflies to my stomach. I'll think about adopting a version of this. Well done Sir.

Really want to catch up with Knife in the Water and Cul-de-sac.

Definitely prioritise Knife in the Water. Polanski eeriness on a boat or in a house? Easy decision.

Watch Tess too. *whisper* looks better than Days of Heaven!

Among Active Directors, these are the names with the most responses. Quality varies wildly and there are some names (Brooks, Gilliam, Wenders) that might have better fit with last week's group. In the end I will be keeping a combined list of all Directors.

If you'd prefer to keep some or all of your ratings private, you can send them to me via Private Message.

Remember to use a 0.0-10.0 scale
