Essentially - A movie orgy
« on: June 11, 2015, 05:04:09 PM »
There are so many projects and personal marathons ongoing at any moment in this moment that I blame the industrious part of the regulars to make the rest of us feel unproductive. I started thinking if there wasn't something I could focus on and the answer was obvious. I was always aware of my many blindspots but this forum made me discover new ones and highlighted the older ones with new brighter colours. It was high time that I should deal with tackling them.

I prepared a somewhat more complete Shame List. As rules, I decided that I should limit myself to three movies per unknown auteur and two per auteur I already had some acquaintance with, so that I wouldn't fill my list with entire filmographies. Since I have mostly been focusing on recent to very recent movies since I have started developing a serious interest in the medium, the list is, as expected, made up of mostly older movies.

The List is supposed to compensate my most egregious blindposts of the most essential movies out there. I came up with it by cross referencing top hundreds and such best ofs such as IMDB's, Roger Ebert's great movies, the sight and sound list, FilmSpotting's sight and sound and of course, this fine forum's very own best movies as determined by the Ratings Project and the director polls -among others.

Without further ado, I give to you my dark spots of shameful ignorance :

Now that's industrious! I'm trying to decide which ones I'm most happy to see on your lists. Perhaps Mike Leigh's, perhaps Powell and Pressburger's... You have a treasure trove of titles.

My turn in the Top 100 Club is next month, and I counted 21 from my list (plus several more in my top 250 list).

I would strongly recommend Werckmeister Harmonies before trying to tackle Satantango.

If you haven't seen Aguirre or Fitzcarraldo, I'd recommend either of those over Nosferatu.  If you have seen both of those, I'd recommend The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser.  Nosferatu is great, but the others are more "essential".

Don't let Satyricon turn you off Fellini in general.

You're going to have me change my list before I even start the damn thing...

I love how you assume I'll hate Satyricon.

That's ambitious of you! I applaud the effort. Now, make sure you have the right opinions about these or else there will be hell to pay.

I can't comment on Satyricon or 8 1/2, but I can say that La Strada is a wonderful film. I was surprised by how realist it is. I was expecting the fantastical dream worlds he's famous for doing later on.

Good luck meeting your ambition. A number of landmark films on that list. If you stick to that schedule your tastes will be changed and/or streamlined in 2 years.
