is it just me or is something wrong with the website?  it seems that information on the calendar and some of the recent reviews you had are gone.

I wouldn't expect anyone to come away with a huge appreciation of anime from only watching films.  I was disappointed to see both Akira and Ghost in the Shell on the marathon list, because although they're important milestones for anime in cinema, I don't find either to be especially good films.  I doubt Adam and Sam have much free time for watching things other than movies, but I think series like FLCL, Paranoia Agent and Haibane Renmei show what anime can offer.

Sounds like Adam might be more into Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex...

Nothing like a nice non-partisan recommendation. ;)

True, but I think the name has more to do with my almost unhealthy interest in post-modern philosophy.  I do really like Ghost in the Shell, although its not my favorite Anime, probably not top 5 or top 10 even.  I just thought Stand Alone Complex has a more straight-forward narrative (although still really philosophical - but anyone should be able to follow the basic story even if they don't get the philosophy).  Plus the Salinger stuff would make Adam happy like we all get when were well-read enough to catch literary references.

you guys realize that Rocky Balboa is getting much better reviews than The Good German.  I really don't see why you guys had to rip on it like you did.

You know Rocky is going to be the next Lake House, right?

I didn't think you were supposed to be able to understand what was happening in Akira or Ghost In The Shell.  Isn't trying to figure it out half the fun of those movies?

The plot of Akira: A boy is kidnapped and his friends try to rescue him.
The plot of Ghost in the Shell: A government agent tries to catch a terrorist.

Whew, that hurt my brain

Just kidding, these movies are very much like the Matrix, which they indeed inspired: action flicks with some philosophy tossed in.  You can take what you want from them, be it spiritual enlightenment or just enjoying some big cartoon explosions.

I do wonder know what Sam would have thought of "Perfect Blue"

Wink taken.

Solaris: guy goes to weird planet.
The Fountain: guy's wife dies, he's sad.
Dead Man: Johnny Depp gets shot and eventually dies.

This is fun.

new filmspotting game

That could be a new forum game!
Give the "log line" (plot synopsis) in the most simple terms for "complex" movies. I.e:
The Matrix = Neo likes noodles.
Star Wars = Everybody is hot for Leia except C-3PO; he's gay.
Blade Runner = Deckard needs viagra.
mpressive...Most impressive.
