I'm going to go ahead and say Fanny and Alexander, as I do for every top 5 list at this point. But it does work! The kids are isolated from their family by the evil bishop.

:D

Contemplating that, makes me wonder what movies have addressed isolation well. The first one that comes to mind is Cast Away, one of my favorite movies. It handles the subject so well, putting me right there in his head space. Has Filmspotting ever done a top 5 isolation movie list?

What Happened Was... (1994)*
Synecdoche, New York (2009)*
The Tenant (1976)*
Quadrophenia (1979)*
Taxi Driver (1976)
Antichrist (2009)
Eraserhead (1977)*
Dogtooth (2009)
The Machinist (2004)*
Blow Up (1966)
The Double (2013)
Moon (2009)*
Mr. Nobody (2009)
The Aviator (2004)
The Ceremony (2008)*
1408 (2007)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Civic Duty (2006)
One Hour Photo (2002)
Into the Wild (2007)
Chasing Sleep (2000)
Dream House (2011)
Faust (1994)
Shame (2011)

Many more if you want. These are my most favorite sorts of films. :)))

Excellent list, Michael! I especially like that you included How the Grinch Stole Christmas. :)

Liking the others, that have been listed too. If Adam and Josh need some ideas, they'll know where to find them!

It's funny, because when I was a kid, walking out of The Grinch I remember feeling something completely different for the character I grew up with. It was the loneliness and isolation that made him who he was.
