Noir-vember Group Marathon 2015
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:54:12 PM »
Time to watch, review and discuss the "crime thrillers" and "murder dramas" of the 40's and 50's.  As well as the gangster pictures of the 30's, late noirs of the early 60's, neo-noirs of the 70's and beyond, and anything in between.  Since noir is different things to different people, if you feel like it belongs here, then it probably does.

Since we have a lot of new people this year, and people who may not be sure what Noir is, I suggest a campaign to get everyone to watch, re-watch, and/or post a review of the film known as the Gold Standard of Film-Noir, Double Indemnity.

Was looking for a list of Film Noir Essentials. Of the following, which titles don't belong and what are some obvious popular choices (as opposed to personal ones) that are missing.
Ace in the Hole
The Asphalt Jungle
The Big Heat
The Big Sleep
Double Indemnity
Gun Crazy
In a Lonely Place
The Killing
Kiss Me Deadly
Mildred Pierce
The Night of the Hunter
Laura
Notorious
Out of the Past
Strangers on a Train
Sunset Blvd.
Sweet Smell of Success
The Third Man
Touch of Evil
White Heat

I'd call Detour essential.

My participation in Noir-vember since I started it five years ago:

2010 - 48
2011 - 58
2012 - 50
2013 - 15
2014 - 10

This year, I'll be surprised if I do more than 2.  Not only is my interest in movies waning, but it's pretty much bottom of the barrel for me at this point.  I've still got a bunch of noir on my watchlist, however none of them are ones I'm dying to see.

I'm getting close to this point too, though my interest in movies was revived a couple of months ago. I remember you had a list of favourite noirs somewhere, could you remind me where it is or repost it? I'm going to finish TSPDT 250 noirs this month and could use some recs that aren't on that list.

Here is my list, but almost all of these are on the TSPDT list too.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Hmmm. Yeah, it's probably just me who never thought too highly of it. Would love to get MT and PA on this. Best 2 out of 3.

I wonder about Detour as well. Seems like writing on that film centers on Ann Savage's 'hold nothing back' performance. I can see it being mentioned on 2nd level like The Narrow Margin, Scarlet Street and The Lady from Shanghai.

Martin, you've been slowly fading away from here. And yeah, it's kind of sad but also unavoidable. You've got such an awesome wife who deserves more of your attention. Noir-vember was coming and I knew that along with the launch of the thread would be a reminder that you're not around as much as you used to be. There's probably nothing we're going to watch that you haven't already seen, but there are people who create great conversation and you are more one who kicks things off with a bunch of great talking points.  :'(

Still it's better than just dropping off the map like smirnoff. And at least we didn't say something to drive you away.

I should definitely participate given I've only seen about half of these.

I'm not sure if Night of the Hunter belongs both because of its content and because it is truly terrible.

Also, on a semi-related note, I just picked up a copy of The Naked City for your Top 100, 1SO. :)

Are you capping it at a certain date? If not, Chinatown should be on the list.

I'd also include Point Blank and The Long Goodbye.
