These 4 held a tight race over a field of 22. With only 1 vote, which film is the greatest?

Just watched Alien again two days ago with my kids.  The jump scares were lame and silly-looking.  But the tone and story and sexual interpretation is still genius.   Way ahead of its time.

A little surprised by Alien sweeping through the horror match ups. Agree with oldkid that the jump scares didn't work for me - other than the chest-burster scene, which I'm inclined to think is the biggest reason this film sticks in peoples' memories.

Is the face hugger leap considered a jump scare? I think that moment is the best version of a scare you know is coming and when it comes it's still scary as hell. (Actually, that may be tied with the air ducts if you think of them as the same type of scare.) I would also argue that the head coming loose is the most clever jump scare ever.

The air ducts is one of the rare straight-up jump scares I fully endorse.

My problem with Alien is that the least interesting stuff is heavily back-loaded, making me love it less at the end then I did during the middle. I've never been able to full-heartedly love the movie as much as most people because of how uninteresting the 20 minutes of strobe light haunted house stuff is.

Easy.

Alien
Psycho
The Shining

You'll love Mulholland Dr. I'd prioritise that.

Eraserhead freaked the hell out of me (still need to write that review), so I am a bit wary of that. Also, it is so so long...

Why do you think I'll love it ?

Emphasizing "horror" in the thread's title I went with The Shining.
