Westerns
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:48:34 PM »

I have been brewing up this crazy plan for a while now, waiting for a few of my other marathons to see their way to conclusion, but after getting the list where I wanted it, I figured I could post the topic a little early and let people chime in with suggestions or comments on the list early, so it is definitely ready when the time comes.

I know what lies ahead of me is daunting, and perhaps more daunting and ambitious than I even know, but I just wanted to thoroughly discover and examine the genre of Westerns, as I have always loved the genre, but never really truly explored its depths. One of the main things that has drawn me to this marathon is the subject matter itself. As many of you may know, my college degree is in history, so I am certainly a bit of a history buff, and I have always found the Wild West time period to be the most fascinating in American history. This certainly draws me to the genre. Even as I was researching the list, I began to realize the wonders to come with so many great stars and directors involved. It should be a lot of fun to see the many spins on the Wild West and beyond.

With the gracious help and support of 1SO, here is the list going into a marathon that is likely to take years to complete. Please, I would love your support in following along and joining the conversation. I hope this thread will only help to compliment Sandy's already incredible Western marathon. And of course, if you have any suggestions for the list that you don't see here, feel free to let me know!

I hope this will be so much fun! As I traditionally do, I will try to work the list chronologically as much as possible, and hopefully I can find most of these titles available. Most of these I have never seen, as, according to Letterboxd, I have seen just 47 of 337 coming into the marathon, as it will certainly grow with new releases (notice I already have four "future" releases listed, though it will be years before I can get to them).

I got a couple extra to represent further two of my favourite directors;

Jubal- Delmer Daves, 1956

I Shot Jesse James- Sam Fuller, 1949
The Baron of Arizona- Sam Fuller, 1950

Another of my faves, Monte Hellman also has China 9, Liberty 37 from 1978. Not so good.

Feels like the 80s must have more Westerns. I'll ponder.

You've seen "Deadwood" right?

Oh yeah. Ravenous fits. :o 8)

I will follow along. I notice that you have the 2003 Ned Kelly film, but not the 1970s Ned Kelly with (shudder) Mick Jagger in the title role, it does not have a good reputation.

Thanks everyone for be as excited as I am for this! Just an FYI, I'm thinking I won't start in until summer, after my Studio Ghibli marathon has concluded (and when I will hopefully be very close to completing my Baseball marathon as well).

I've been keeping an eye out on TCM for Westerns showing and I've been recording them to make things easier once this marathon kicks off, but as a result, I have added a few new titles to the crowded list. I know it's already an obnoxious number of titles, but I figure some of the titles, in particular some of the earlier ones, might be hard to come by, so if that should happen in this marathon, I won't try too hard to track things down unless someone shouts at me that it's essential. So basically if my library, YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo, or some other easily accessed streaming site doesn't have the title, I'll simply pass it over.

Here is what I've found playing on TCM that wasn't on my list before:

The Girl of the Golden West (Robert Z. Leonard, 1938)
Wyoming (Richard Thorpe, 1940)
The Virginian (Stuart Gilmore, 1946)
Montana Belle (Allan Dwan, 1952)

What do you plan to do about the ones you've watched already ? Rewatches or leave them aside ?

Rewatches. There's a good many that deserve a rewatch, and especially by the time I actually get to them  :P
