DarkeningHumour's Filmspotter Forum Top 100 (2014) Checklist
« on: March 27, 2016, 02:19:05 AM »
I had a look at the local Top 100 and decided to sort of prioritise the movies from that list that I haven't watched yet. Considering the assiduity with which I have (not) been following my other personal marathons this will probably take a while and indeed not turn out to be a marathon at all, more an elongated thing that I will get to once in a while. Still, I do intend to complete it, whatever the actual deadline will turn out to be. So here's the list of 25 movies.

#6 Once Upon A Time in the West (Sergio Leone,1968)
#14 City Lights (Charles Chaplin, 1931)
#27 The Double Life of Véronique (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1991)
#29 Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944)
#34 Mulholland Dr. (David Lynch, 2001)
#37 The Night of the Hunter (1955, Charles Laughton)
#38 Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)
#42 The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Sergio Leone,1966)
#48 Fanny and Alexander (Ingmar Bergman, 1982)
#57 Sunrise (F.W. Murnau, 1927)
#58 The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949)
#61 Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
#63 The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)
#64 Ikiru (Akira Kurosawa, 1952)
#65 Sweet Smell of Success [Alexander Mackendrick, 1957]
#67 In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950)
#73 The General (1926, Buster Keaton)
#76 M (Fritz Lang, 1931)
#79 The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1928)
#83 Brazil (Terry Gilliam, 1985)
#88 Night and Fog (1955, Alain Resnais)
#91 Chungking Express (Wong Kar Wai, 1994)

Lots of reviews will probably be posted in other threads, mainly the Top 100 Club, possible marathons and my Essentially list. This will mainly function as an index. You know, if I ever get down to updating it.

EDIT:

As I make my way through the list I am getting to the point where only the movies I less wanted to watch become available. At the same time, it would not be the worst thing to add some more forum-appreciated movies to broaden the selection. That in mind, here are the added movies from past Top 100 forum lists that I have not watched. Thanks to Corndog for compiling the Letterboxd list that made it easy to find them.

Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)
City of God (Fernando Meirelles, 2002)
Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio de Sica, 1948)
City Lights (Charles Chaplin, 1931)
Wild Strawberries (Ingmar Bergman, 1957)
Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972)
Y Tu Mamá Tambien (Alfonso Cuarón, 2001)
Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980)
The Birds (Alfred Hitchcock, 1963)
The Silence of Sleep (Michel Gondry, 2006)
Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders, 1984)
North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959)
Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979)
Duck Soup (Leo McCarrey, 1933)
Yi Yi (Edward Yang, 2000)
Le Samourai (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1967)
Happy Together (Wong Kar-wai, 1997)
Hoop Dreams (Steve James, 1994)
This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984)
Aguirre: The Wrath of God (Werner Herzog, 1972)
Fitzcarraldo (Werner Herzog, 1982)
Show Me Love (Lukas Moodysson, 1998)
Scenes from a Marriage (Ingmar Bergman, 1973)

As always, only the 5.5 hour cut of Fanny and Alexander counts. Good luck.

I know, and I fully intend to watch that one. In other words, I will probably never actually get to it, or I will watch it forcefully after having exhausted the rest of the list. Mulholland Dr. will probably be the next to last movie.

It should be the first!

It might be the only thing to ever get me to watch Back to the future.

I have 45 left to go, including 4 in the top 10!!! I'd better get cracking!

It might be the only thing to ever get me to watch Back to the future.

Why don't you want to watch it?

I mean, I understand making assumptions about a film and not taking the time to watch it (while acknowledging that you could be pleasantly surprised if and when you do watch it), but "Back To The Future" is an odd one to me.

This takes me back to that delightful discussion about Die Hard being better than BttF.

Good times.
