One More Time with Feeling  (Andrew Dominik, 2016)

Dominik's film about Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds struggles to find the right balance between being an artistic portrait, a collection of music videos, and a self-aware documentary. The music is generally good. The film includes full-length performances of seven songs — though it actually feels like more (in a bad way). Back-to-back numbers in the middle of the film really derail momentum, but the doc eventually recovers. Cave's poetically-inclined ruminations add to the hypnotic atmosphere and did a lot to keep my invested. There's an important backstory to what we see here that's repeatedly alluded to but kept more a less a mystery, purportedly to avoid feeling exploitative of tragedy — but the end result is still the same. That unspoken mystery actually becomes something of a distraction, and I think this is the rare film that might actually benefit from spoilers.

The credits reminded my that this film was shot in 3D; that's not how I watched it, and I have no idea if it'd add to the experience at all. The same credits also offered this surprising legal caveat: "Although many of the events referred to in this film are broadly based on events which actually took place, the depictions of some events and characters portrayed have been fictionalized and therefore are not to be viewed as factually accurate."

Killing Them Softly
★ ★ ★ - Good

An unusual crime film that manages to stand out from the congested field by doing a lot of different things and doing them very well. Usually, "it's not about the plot" means my eyes are going to glaze over (which I think happened to many), but the characters are an interesting bunch of losers who can't get past their own personal flaws. The tallest mountain is James Gandolfini, cast well against type as a specialist whose life is falling apart so hard that he's completely useless. He doesn't even see what bad shape he's in, covering it up with booze and bluster. His scenes stop the story cold, but they're fascinating detours.

Andrew Dominik is getting better at drawing out the moments, highlighted by a robbery towards the beginning that's excruciating to sit through. (Ben Mendelsohn, another actor playing outside his wheelhouse to great effect.) Dominik overbakes everything just enough so that there's an elevation to the performances and dialogue without seeming phony. This tone is cocooned by a world in economic collapse, with constant speeches by politicians playing on the TV and radio, a sound mix that's as bold and strong as Nolan's Dunkirk, a number of impressive scenes and shots that alone make this worth watching, and Art Direction that exudes polluted desperation like Bela Tarr filmed in color. Like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, it doesn't satisfy as a genre film, but it's got a lot of quality.

How was Mendelsohn playing out of his wheelhouse, he has played a large array of characters. Of course I have been watching him in roles for over 30 years, so it is perhaps a bias towards his more recent work you are referring to.
