I think that tradition lends the festival a certain charm.

What's charming about booing ? Or sycophantically applauding for several minutes for that matter ?

It's not the act itself, it's the communal participation in something that is silly. Both booing and applause are primal childish reactions that these otherwise serious critics indulge in because they're on this Cannes high of non-stop movie watching and partying. There is also a sheepish effect that I find funny to observe, as deplorable as it may be.

I thought booing was a good thing, or at least that the films that typically get booed at Cannes turn out to be good films.

Childish??? It can be a superior form of communication in some cases and one which requires discernment. Hardly childish.

How is it "superior" ?

I don't think it means much really, I just think it's ridiculous.

Sometimes words aren't what is needed. Actions trump them. And these are overt proactive actions.

So if I meet Zack Snyder, should I punch him in the face to express my distaste of BvS because "sometimes words aren't what is needed" ?

Booing, while obviously better than that, is disrespectful, plain and simple. And yes, it's childish... all you're expressing is "you suck !". How is that anything else than a desperate plea for attention ?

Coincidentally I just heard a guy speaking about a book he wrote about Dylan's first electric guitar show in Manchester. They booed him.  ;D
