Top 5 Moviest Movies
« on: May 13, 2016, 02:41:56 AM »
I was listening to the podcast and Adam said something about Vertigo being one of those movies that could only be a movie and would not work as another art form. He had his own reasons for thinking that, which I will not get into here. I was inspired though to ask everyone what the best movies that could not be anything but a movie are. Use whatever definition of "moviest" you would rather. It is not a real word anyway.

I will post my list after giving it some more thought.

First ones that come to mind are :

Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo/The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (or any Leone western really)

Under the Skin*
Victoria
Suspiria

*I know there's a book, but still.
Legend: All-Time Favorite | Great  |  Very Good  |  Good  |  Poor  |  Bad

I wonder, are there Western books ?

And I get how Victoria and 8 1/2 might be considered movieful, if not necessarily moviest. The others I have not seen.

I'd think you can describe anything you can film. The change is you can now film anything you can describe, I suppose.

I can say Mulholland Drive because I'm not sure you deliver that ineffable power in words because it's the completeness of word, image and sound that is talking to the brain. Since the movie is about dream. It would work poorly if the user interface had a layer of words introduced. Similarly because Hiroshima mon amour and Marienbad in particular are, again, movies of memory and, like dream, more of the mind's catacombs and caverns than most films. The translation would be poor but a book is still possible.

For me, movies of which their visual styles could only be presented to their fullest extent on the big screen would qualify as "moviest" in this thread's context.

Speed Racer
Independence Day

Ex Machina
Victoria

Cecil B. Demented

There's a reason why ID4 was released early on blu-ray, so that everyone could test out the visual extent of their players on their big-ass HDTVs. I'd say about the same for Speed Racer, given its bright and colorful universe.

As for Cecil... Well, it's a movie about making indie movies. Would be kinda weird to present the idea in a book or even a TV show.

Agree with Mulholland Dr. Some others:

Three Colours Blue
Only Lovers Left Alive

The best one I can think of at the moment is:

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her lover

I agree with one of these a lot more than the others. I will let you guess which.

Of course! Ever heard of Zane Grey?

Joseph Cotten's character in The Third Man is an author of Westerns. A signifier of his simplified, black & white view of the world. Sheriffs and outlaws. It's part of what make his Americanness stand out in a more morally nuanced Europe.

Sunshine.

Cliff Curtis' experiment with filter strengths at the start and the transit of Mercury (how apt this week!) sequence.

I've read enough starships diving at suns storylines and nothing on paper contends with these images. Boyle has to transmit the psychological impact of the Suns power since it takes a dramatic part.
