I was wondering what to focus on with summer school for my kids (I know, I'm so mean! :)) ), but luckily I just got home from my 11 year old's class program on the Civil War and it's a perfect springboard to carry us into these next few months with a theme. Movies that I want to incorporate, off the top of my head are:

Gone with the Wind
Gettysburg
Shenandoah

It's worth reminding you that Shenandoah has a scene that suggests the rape of one of the female leads at the hands of a Confederate.

Just thought about Andersonville, which is about a POW camp in the south during the Civil War. I remember liking it quite a bit, though it has been some time since I saw it. It won a Primetime Emmy and was nominated for a slew of others.

It's been a very long time since I've seen the movie, so I appreciate the reminder!

This is at my library! Thanks, Corndog.

I finished my book on Lincoln and it turns out he gets shot at the end.

I was not crazy about Cold Mountain. I must have been around your child's age when I watched it and did not see the point of it. A lot of that was because I did not understand the historical context though, which I think is less likely to happen to an American however. The Civil War is a big thing over there, right ?

Yes, very big. It kept us together as a nation, by tearing it apart and then slowly piecing it back together. It's our great big scar that saved us. Strange and almost unbelievable. It's fascinating and horrific and humbling.

Yeah, I knew that, I was being jokingly foreign.

Do you think I am Scandinavian ? Is it because of my lustrous blonde hair and my habit of eating moose ?

I knew you thought I was Portuguese last year because I logged in from Lisbon when I first came to the forum and had not changed my privacy settings yet. But according to that logic, if I had come to the forum now you would be telling me about your historical knowledge of the opium wars...

(Also, and for the record, I don't like my nationality and place of living to be public information on the internet.  ;))

No reason to feel bad though, I don't know many people who are very knowledgeable about the history of either of Europe's edges.
