My reasoning was that it was a self-contained feature length story. But I'm cool with it not counting.

I loved it and I'm also in favor of it not counting.

Is Tower eligible for Best Animated Film?

The majority of the film is rotoscope animation, but there is some archive footage. There are also some shots where the characters are animated, but the background is a real photo. Waltz With Bashir does the same, but that only uses real footage at the very end. This is about 80% animated. Would certainly make my Top 5 in that category.

I'll be curious to hear what others say about Tower once they've seen it, but for now we can definitely add it with a caveat that its up to each individual voter to determine the eligibility of it as an Animated Film.

I'm very curious about it myself. Is it streaming anywhere yet?

goodguy, I don't believe this is eligible. It appears to have received a US release in July 2015.

In that case, it does look like the DVD release wasn't until November of this year. I'll add the FYCs.

Starting to work on my ballot, so I have questions.

Is a film like The Salesman, which played only in festivals in 2016 (as far as the US are concerned I mean) and will be released in late January, eligible ? Seems like it shouldn't, if I'm understanding the general rules correctly.

It's probably worth clarifying anyway because it's pretty likely to be nominated at the Oscars... I think the Foreign category plays by different rules, with films sometimes being eligible for the main categories a year ater being nominated there.

Then there's Ma vie de Courgette / My Life as a Zucchini, in a somewhat similar situation (US release in February), also present in the Foreign Language shortlist, which confusingly seems to be eligible for the Animated Oscar despite not even having played festivals in the US yet (IMDB lists the upcoming Sundance festival as its first US date). What do we do with that ?
