Exposure  Chat Excerpts  (Press play on each title and follow along. :) )

KnockedOutLoaded: hi
Junior: might have to drop out early, got a lot of work to do, but I'm here to see what the hubub is about
KnockedOutLoaded: nice
Sandy: glad to have you here!

"You Burn Me Up (I'm A Cigarette)"
Sandy: I'm all by myself here, so I've got the music turned up!!
KnockedOutLoaded: this came out in 79. i don't know if this is a parody on new wave or what
Junior: lol
Sandy: I was reading about Darly Hall and Fripp said, "Daryl's pipes were a wonder. I have never worked with a more able singer."
KnockedOutLoaded: yes. he produce one solo album for him that rca didn't want to release
Sandy: did it ever get released elsewhere?
KnockedOutLoaded: a few years later as sacred songs
Sandy: do you like the album? I'd like to listen to it sometime
KnockedOutLoaded: not when i bought it. i was 19 then and fully didn't understand it. now i adore it
Sandy: :)    ...This is the song where I got the line for the GLBooth post, "Strategic interaction terminal inaction... A bitter hostile faction irreducible fraction" " it made me smile.

"Breathless"
KnockedOutLoaded: these drums are so so good
Sandy: very intricate, lots of layers. love it
KnockedOutLoaded: this is the middle part. we'll return to the original motif later
Sandy: Do you know Fripp's story? Where he began?
Junior: This is not exactly my type of music, but I appreciate the complexity here
KnockedOutLoaded: nice jr! fripp was the frontman of king crimson
Sandy: Alex is always so great about listening to things outside his wheelhouse.
oh, that's right! I think Sam introduced me to King Crimson, or it might have been you, KOL. I can't remember.
KnockedOutLoaded: the group was active the first half of the '70s. must be sam!
Sandy probably! he loves his prog! This song is very reminiscent of it. What exactly is your wheelhouse, Alex?
Junior: I have no idea what my wheelhouse is. It's more defined by what's not in it than what is. Some definite inclusions would be modern indie rock/pop/r+b, soul, classic rock/pop/r+b, some rap of all eras, jazz, classical. You know, a little bit of everything
Sandy: anything sax!
Junior: Sax is king!
KnockedOutLoaded: when the group folded he did session work with peter gabriel, bowie among others. he moved to hell's kitchen i ny and started working on this
Sandy: that's cool. love NYC creative pockets

"Disengage"
KnockedOutLoaded: this next one must be a ny scene. i think of cassavetes. love the brutality
Sandy: Cassavetes is very distinctively NYC, isn't he?
KnockedOutLoaded: i would guess so
Junior: I just picked up that Cassavetes criterion box set
Sandy: his movies I've seen, very urban
Junior: excited to get into it a bit over break
Sandy: does it have Faces?
Junior: yeah
KnockedOutLoaded: gr8
Sandy: That is my favorite of his so far, by far
Junior: cool, ill be sure t check it out
Sandy: that song went by too fast!

"North Star"
Sandy: I was looking up some of the lyrics to this album yesterday and this is the one I fell in love with. the music is perfect for it.
Junior: i like this one a lot
Sandy: simple lyrics, mostly, "Now touch Touch here Now warm Now near Now near..."
KnockedOutLoaded: but fantastic vocals!
Sandy: yes! like a mantra. Is this is Hall too?
KnockedOutLoaded: yes! i like how this contrasts with the former track
Sandy: beautiful
Junior: i like the background wails

"Chicago"
Sandy: This music if fantastic! is this Hall?
KnockedOutLoaded: no. i think it's peter hammill
Sandy: yeah, his voice sounded different... whoa these songs are too short! like they rev you up and then drop you like a hot potato!
Junior: so this Fripp guy is just the guitar? Or does he write the lyrics for others to sing, too?
KnockedOutLoaded: i don't now. some of the lyric were by his girlfriend at the time
Sandy: hmm, I like that.
KnockedOutLoaded: this next one is the best

"NY3"
Sandy: ha!
Junior: huh, that's cool
KnockedOutLoaded: play it loud
SandyKcreator: I need better speakers.
KnockedOutLoaded: :D
Sandy: very NYC too! he is recreating hell's kitchen
KnockedOutLoaded: exactly. but times two maybe.
Sandy: (That opening rift of the drums! very reminiscent of Rush's "Tom Sawyer")

"Mary"
KnockedOutLoaded: the pictures in this clip are edie sedgwick
Sandy: Do you know who Mary is?
KnockedOutLoaded: no
Sandy: me neither :)
KnockedOutLoaded: but the lyrics were written by his fiance. i love how layered this song is.
Sandy: I wanted to post some of the lyrics to Mary, because they really caught my attention too.
That a creature could be so lonely
It became my deepest wish
To give her my love
To embrace her forever
And to have her find some peace
She who was so lonely
Came with volumes of feeling I have never known

KnockedOutLoaded: it's very beautiful

"Exposure"
KnockedOutLoaded:then we get this.... genius!
Sandy: it has beauty in a whole other direction!
KnockedOutLoaded: yeah! i'm glad i found this video on youtube. I haven't seen it before.
Sandy: haha, that scream! primal
KnockedOutLoaded: very.
Sandy: barbaric yawp!
KnockedOutLoaded: listen to it with phones
Sandy: i will!
KnockedOutLoaded: there's a version with hall's vocals on the tube too
Junior: ok, i'm gonna have to bow out. this was fun! I liked it, even if it wasn't very close to what I normally listen to. see you all later!
Sandy: Thanks Junior!
KnockedOutLoaded: thanks for popping in!

"Hεεden Two"
KnockedOutLoaded: incredible dismal pathetic chord sequence..... ha'
Sandy: excellent adjectives... haha, I thought you wrote that at first.
KnockedOutLoaded: :D
Sandy: I was going to say, Are you sure English isn't your first language?
KnockedOutLoaded: quite positive! thanks, i guess!
Sandy: You have a great mastery of the language, but when you strung those adjectives together I was pretty floored.
KnockedOutLoaded: well, it was brian eno!
Sandy: haha then Eno is the linguist!

"Night I: Urban Landscape 1981"
KnockedOutLoade: this isn't from the album but very similar. frippertronics.... he plays with delays.
Sandy: can you help me understand "delays"?
KnockedOutLoaded: you insert a sound that repeats itself after say 4 secs. like an echo that reappears
Sandy: thank you. I should've know that. My son is a sound engineer. :) Now I want to hear that song again and listen for the patterns

"I May Not Have Had Enough Of Me But I've Had Enough Of You"
Sandy: Like Talking Heads, I hear a lot of words as sounds, percussive
KnockedOutLoaded: they were in the same ballpark for a while. eno is a common denominator. and ny too, maybe the record is littered with guitar sounds like that
like now!
Sandy: I hear it! I'm impressed with it's bold experimentation, like they want to try stuff and are enjoying the freedom. yes, the layers, getting more dense.
KnockedOutLoaded: it was high tech then. digital technology didn't exist
Sandy: innovation in the analog age. yes, that! haha

"Water Music I - Here Comes The Flood"
KnockedOutLoaded: this is peter gabriel. the song is on his second album as well
Sandy: aw Mr. Gabriel. this is lovely. This a re-imagined song of his?
KnockedOutLoaded: fripp produced that record. but this version is different. more naked and desperate.
Sandy: see! You do have excellent adjectives!!
KnockedOutLoaded: its the same song. thanks sandy!
Sandy: this is so emotional, "Lord, here comes the flood..."
KnockedOutLoaded: i get tears in my eyes.... that rarely happens
Sandy: then my tears are not unusual for the song then?
KnockedOutLoaded: no!
SandyKcreator: I thought it was a combination of being sick and well, me just being me. :')
KnockedOutLoaded: ...mmm. there's some kind of montage at the end, but this is it!
Sandy: thank you so much for this album! I had a great time listening in.
KnockedOutLoaded: my pleasure!

It was fun in the booth yesterday. Thanks to Sandy and Junior for participating, and thanks to Sandy for transcribing!

I just would like to correct the title "Promo Film" which in fact is the title track, "Exposure". For those that may be interested, here is Peter Gabriel's version (produced by Fripp) of the same song. And "NY3" is on Daryl Hall's "Sacred Songs" as NYCNY. Fun to compare. ::)
Extraordinary (81-100˚) | Very good (61-80˚) | Good (41-60˚) | Fair (21-40˚) | Poor (0-20˚)

Next week, get into the spirit and celebrate the life of another artist gone too soon.

That's right, It's A Holiday Soul Party with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings!

The Guardian says, "Corny as it may be at times, this is an album that oozes soulful cheer." Sounds like fun to me.

It's A Holiday Soul Party  Chat Excerpts  (Press play and follow along. :) )

"Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects"
Sandy: What a title
Junior: Sharon Jones was a pretty cool lady, i've been a fan of hers for a while. her songs have been in a few commercials.
Sandy: I hadn't heard of her name until you posted the album
Junior: part of why i like her is that she sounds right out of the 60s and 70s
Sandy: (Momma sat me down and said "Baby, Santa Clause does magic things. As soon as you're asleep a chimney will appear." That's quick thinking.)

"8 Days (of Hanukkah)"
Sandy: how nice of her to make a Hannukah song!
Junior: yeah, she's got a really cool vibe of inclusivity which is nice
Knocked Out Loaded: it's funky
Sandy: she would have been terrific on sesame street
Knocked Out Loaded: ha ha
Junior: for sure, she probably was on it at some point.
Sandy: i bet!
Junior: as you can tell, the horns and guitar and drums are also super great. they're the Dap-Kings and they're the best
Sandy: it's pure joy, this music
Knocked Out Loaded: enlighten me, what's hannukah
Junior: Jewish holiday about oil lasting longer than it was supposed to, i think
Sandy: its' from a historical incident (miracle - eight days of burning the menorah, with only one day supply of oil.)
KnockedOutLoaded: is she jewish?
Junior: no, but I think some of her band members are
Sandy: cool

"White Christmas"
Junior: now you'll be able to see her in all of her glory, though live performances are really where it's at
Sandy: I love it! she's rockin that frock!
Junior: you gotta rock the frock!
Knocked Out Loaded: almost like tina turner
Junior: she's definitely got a Turner vibe
Sandy: what a twist on the song, I hardly recognize it
Knocked Out Loaded: strutty!
Junior: yeah, it's a lot of fun. she's rarely a downer, which is another reason why I like her, even her breakup songs are more about kissoffs than sadness
Knocked Out Loaded: the band's a bit pale though

"Just Another Christmas Song"
Sandy: a medley of many songs, one line after another... I was just going to say how refreshing this album is, because it's so different than the typical songs I hear all season
and here she's addressing it. and putting a twist on them

"Silent Night"
Sandy: ala the blues!
Junior: she's really does shake things up nicely on this record. there's a great tiny desk concert from NPR with her doing 3 songs from this album and she forgets some lines and she just rolls with it with a lot of verve.
Knocked Out Loaded: i'll check it out later
Junior: she was getting chemo treatments (or was recently off of them) around when this came out, so that she was able to do this at all is pretty impressive, I think
Knocked Out Loaded: cancer is a bitch
Junior: for real. I was sad to see she had died last month, but I kind of knew it was coming.
Knocked Out Loaded: this is cool. I like the restrained arrangement

"Big Bulbs"
Junior: Oh this one is so much fun. guess what she's talking about!
Knocked Out Loaded: i'm in the dark
Sandy: I'm trying to guess... am I too naive to understand?
Junior: u=a, second b=l. flashing in your window tonight. big balls!
Sandy: haha. why are they flashing in the window
Junior: she's looking forward to getting down with him tonight and he's a little freaky
Sandy: :)) cheeky

"Please Come Home For Christmas"
Junior: this is the only one where I don't think she adds all that much to the popular versions, but it's still a solid rendition
Sandy: It's still as great as I've heard this song done
Knocked Out Loaded: i'm a bit unfamiliar with how it usually sounds....
Junior: yeah, it's just not better than it usually is. it sounds a lot like this, KoL
Knocked Out Loaded: ok
Junior: well, maybe except for this end part

"Funky Little Drummer Boy"
Junior: oh, I love this one. totally different sound
Sandy: this song needed a re do!
Junior: my mom hates this version (it's her fave christmas song)
Sandy: how interesting that she loves this song best
Junior: yeah, she's a weirdo!
Sandy: ha! ...usually the drumming is so dull
Knocked Out Loaded: I like this. didn't bowie do this one?
Sandy: yes! we should find it!
Junior: it was half of that bowie/bing thing that's my favorite christmas song. I can play it after.
Knocked Out Loaded: nice drum break!
Sandy: it is! Love the syncopation.
Knocked Out Loaded: tell your mother it's a nice version!
Junior: this is a much livelier version than most others and I love it. goes out on a drum solo, too, of course
Knocked Out Loaded: good wailing!

"Silver Bells"
Junior: this one feels a little Stevie Wonder-y
Knocked Out Loaded: started like a gospel
Junior: yeah, that's there to throw you off!
Knocked Out Loaded: then the delivery is pretty straight forward
Junior: I'm glad she treated this like an album you'd actually play at a party, no real slow songs. I'm a big fan of the crazy instruments on this one. you almost couldn't tell it's Silver bells except for her singing the lyrics

"World Of Love"
Knocked Out Loaded: this was slow!
Sandy: like a slow dance
Junior: well, it's almost the end of the party!
Sandy: winding down
Knocked Out Loaded: some will leave lucky, some sad
Sandy: it has an undercurrent of melancholy. Yes! just like that KoL
Knocked Out Loaded: c'est la vie!
Junior: I like that she's continuing that inclusiveness here
Sandy: lovin' the trumpets
Junior: she does this once an album, just lets the horns go for it on a song
Sandy: lets them loose!
Knocked Out Loaded: did she had a fixed band?
Sandy: There's a Peer Gynt slant to this song
Junior: yeah, though they also worked on other people's albums sometimes

Junior: well, that's everything!
Knocked Out Loaded: thanks! i feel a bit more festive already!
Sandy: me too! Junior, I'm grateful for your introduction of Sharon. I'm adding her to my Christmas playlist.
Junior: happy to introduce you to it. she's really great. Maybe I'll put some of her non-christmas stuff up in that thread as well. to give you a feel of what she normally does.

Bonus Christmas Songs

Bing Crosby & David Bowie - "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy"
Knocked Out Loaded: ;( RIP, david
Junior: gosh, this is just the best thing.
Sandy: it really is. the old guard and the new, at least back then. Were you the one that introduced it to me, Junior?
Junior: I wouldn't be surprised. I've been kind of obsessed with it ever since college
Sandy: it's something really special
Knocked Out Loaded: this is a great conversation
Sandy: I just watched Going My Way a few nights ago.
Junior: this is kind of a crappy video, but the song still kicks butt
Sandy: it really gets to me. Emotions!
Junior: yeah, especially here, "for my child and your child too"
Knocked Out Loaded: what year?
Junior: 77
Knocked Out Loaded: time flies!
Junior: aired about a month after Bing died, actually

The Pogues, featurig Kirsty MacColl - "Fairytale Of New York"
Knocked Out Loaded: i love this
Junior: :)
Knocked Out Loaded: shane is a tragic guy, but great
Junior: this is so great. I hadn't heard it until a year or two ago
Knocked Out Loaded: kirsty, RIP too. she drowned, i think. in the caribbean
Junior: yeesh
Sandy: you know all the musicians, KoL
Knocked Out Loaded: she was married to steve lillywhite, a producer. reasonably known. he worked with u2

Knocked Out Loaded: can i play one too?
Sandy: please!

Bob Dylan - "Must Be Santa"
Junior: oh yes, love this album
Knocked Out Loaded: yeah!
Sandy: Of Course! we must have Dylan's Christmas!
Knocked Out Loaded: everyone was perplexed when this album was announced
Junior: it's both incongruous and totally fits. we had a christian lady doing a Hanukkah song, now a jewish guy doing Christmas. that's the spirit, i'm saying.
Knocked Out Loaded: wonderful! i'm pepped!
Sandy: everyone gets to do their take on a christmas album it seems!

The Shins - "Wonderful Christmas Time"
Sandy: I haven't heard this rendition
Knocked Out Loaded: this is a mccartney song
Sandy: it's hard to beat McCartney, but it's still cute
Junior: I like this intstrumentation better
Knocked Out Loaded: better one to dance to
