A Decade of Filmspots
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:24:36 AM »
2016 marks the tenth year of our annual Filmspot awards. In honor of that anniversary, I thought it'd be a good time to catch up, collectively, with some of the nominees/winners that we missed the first time around. This might end up just being my own personal marathon, but I'll keep this first post open for tracking purposes, in case anyone else wants to join me.

Clearly I've been too busy organizing the Filmspots the past nine years to actually watch any of the award-worthy films. I'm legitimately embarrassed by the number of winners that I still haven't seen: 39!!! I thought that'd maybe be my total of unseen nominees, but not winners! Yikes. (And that doesn't even count the early winners for Worst Film and Most Disappointing Film.)

Here's the list of unseen Filmspot recipients that I want to chip away at before the next set of winners is announced in the spring of 2017.

2007
I'm Not There — Supporting Actress, Ensemble Cast
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street — Costumes, Makeup
Enchanted — Surprising Performance

2008
Waltz with Bashir — Score

2009
24 City — Documentary
Bright Star — Cinematography
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans — Line

2010
Dogtooth — Original Screenplay
127 Hours — Actor
Black Swan — Editing, Sound, Dramatic Scene
Never Let Me Go — Cinematography
Four Lions — Debut Feature, Comedic Scene

2011
Certified Copy — Actress
The Skin I Live In — Non-English Language Film
The Interrupters — Documentary
Melancholia — Sound, Shot
Hanna — Score
Hugo — Art Direction
The Trip — Comedic Scene
The Guard — Line
Another Year — Nominee Only
Once Upon a Time in Anatolia — Nominee Only

2012
The Master — Actor, Supporting Actor, Score, Dramatic Scene
The Kid with a Bike — Supporting Actress
Holy Motors — Non-English Language Film
Cloud Atlas — Editing

2013
Blue Is the Warmest Color — Actress
The Hunt — Non-English Language Film
Wolf Children — Animated Film
The Grandmaster — Art Direction
Gimme the Loot — Overlooked Film
Oblivion — Nominee Only
Computer Chess — Nominee Only
Upstream Color — Editing, Score

2014
Inherent Vice — Adapted Screenplay, Soundtrack
Under the Skin — Actress, Sound, Score, Cinematography, Dramatic Scene
The Immigrant — Shot
Force Majeure — Nominee Only

2015
Phoenix — Actress, Dramatic Scene
Clouds of Sils Maria — Supporting Actress
The Assassin — Non-English Language Film
The Overnighters — Documentary
Mommy — Soundtrack
Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem — Overlooked Film
What We Do in the Shadows — Line

2018
Hereditary — Nominee Only

I'm pretty much excited to see all of these, and with no foreseeable availability issues, this might be my first marathon that actually moves along at a steady pace.

The only nominees I haven't seen are:

Helvetica (Best Doc Nom, 2007)
Year of the Dog (Surprising Performance Nom, 2007)
Epic Movie (Worst Film Winner, 2007)
Che (Best Foreign Language Nom, 2008)
My Blueberry Nights (Best Soundtrack Winner, 2008)
Mr. Lonely (Most Surprising Nom, 2008)
To The Wonder (Most Overlooked Nom, 2013)

Safe to say I will not be rushing to catch up with the Worst Film. Could maybe try for a few of the others. Mr. Lonely is most intriguing I think.

Great idea ! I don't want to have multiple marathons running, so I'll keep this one in mind for the far-off future, because my list of unseen Filmspots winners is pretty big I suspect. Will be following along in the meantime.

This is a cool marathon. If I was more into keeping up with new films, I'd be interested in doing a similar marathon.

Glad you'll be catching up with Certified Copy, all the 2012 titles, Wolf Children and The Immigrant. That's a lot of greatness right there.

You're missing out on the great Mamoru Hosoda films. You liked The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Same director.

I liked it to a degree. 76/100.

I'm fine with "missing out" on just about any movie. Maybe not a new one by Tsai or Tarr, but otherwise I think I'll be okay.
