US Autumn Box Office Game

Well it look like there is enough interest so another seasonal game is on. However the first question is do we also include up to Jan 1 (the Box Office Mojo Holiday season), which takes it from a 2 month season to a 4 month season?

I would love to participate as well. I would prefer to play four months and I imagine guesstimating the success of Oscar-type movies should make for a change for the veterans among you.

Yeah, fall season is completely different, should be fun to see how poorly we do (I suspect it will be much more unpredictable than summer, as hard as that already was).

I'm in favour of following the boxofficemojo timeline, if only because we can easily look at previous results in that period.

I'm in. Was thinking about this one last week. Going to be much harder to predict.

So at the moment we have 1 for 4 months and 1 for 2 months.

I'm in and non-committal for what season. I agree it may be easier to stick to the Box Office Mojo defined seasons when doing this for simplicity sake, giving us 5 seasons a year basically.

I'm in. I like the idea of following boxofficemojo's seasonal divisions.

edit: Wow, last year's fall looked like this:

1. The Martian ($228,433,663)
2. Hotel Transylvania 2 ($169,700,110)
3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials ($81,697,192)
4. Goosebumps ($80,080,379)
5. The Intern ($75,764,672)
6. Bridge of Spies ($72,313,754)
7. The Visit ($65,206,105)
8. Black Mass ($62,575,678)
9. The Perfect Guy ($57,027,435)
10. Sicario ($46,889,293)
11. Everest (2015) ($43,482,270)
12. Brooklyn ($38,322,743)
13. Pan ($35,088,320)
14. Crimson Peak ($31,090,320)
15. The Last Witch Hunter ($27,367,660)
16. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension ($18,300,124)
17. Steve Jobs ($17,766,658)
18. Room ($14,677,654)

This is going to be hard. I wonder how many of our lists would have included Pan?

I wonder how long after the end of fall (labor day weekend) it took for the top ten to solidify. Probably not until the end of year.

edit: It looks like the top ten actually solidified itself just in time for Thanksgiving weekend. It was that last full week of November that Goosebumps climbed past The Intern and The Mase Runner sequel climbed past Goosebumps.

I'm in. I think sticking with bo-mojo's season divisions is a good idea.

Wow, these autumn releases will be so hard to be predict. The only one I think is a guarantee to open over 30 million is Blair Witch.

Magnificent Seven, Birth of a Nation, Bridget Jones, and Girl on the Train could break out if reviews are really good (though Bridget Jones is going to suffer going up against Blair Witch, and Birth and Train go head-to-head their opening weekend, which will cut into their auds).

Inferno comes way too long after people stopped caring about Dan Brown's books.

Sully, Snowden, and Deepwater might have legs (probably not Snowden because 50% of the country simply won't see it on principle), but I doubt they'll pop a big number on opening weekend.
