  • Up with generosity!
    • yet more inanities!

As the Summer 2016 movie season winds down, some critics are already writing it off as the worst summer ever. Ever the optimists, they look ahead to fall with their Top 5 Fall Movie Questions. Plus, reviews of the acclaimed West Texas-set heist movie HELL OR HIGH WATER and new animated feature KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS. Also, the sixth film in the Contemporary Nordic Cinema Marathon – 1001 GRAMS from Norway's Bent Hamer – and Adam nominates another Golden Brick contender.

Adam, re: Sully

It's called the tall poppy syndrome, defined as a perceived tendency to discredit or disparage those who have achieved notable wealth or prominence in public life.

Aussies use the term often.

Oh! But one you did miss - and this is my question -

Will a Kelly Reichardt film finally score some type of Oscar nomination for what's poised to be her first Awards Season release CERTAIN WOMEN (released in October)?

I've been waiting for that film for so long, cannot wait to finally see it. Can't believe it took so long to get out.

I'm also way interested in Manchester By The Sea.

As a recent MFA screenwriting graduate, I really liked Hell or High water in terms of structure, plot, character, and just overall story arc.  As a resident of New Mexico, where much of the movie was shot, and as someone who grew up in southern Oklahoma, and North and West Texas well, I related to the landscape. As a Comanche however, the constant references to my culture were a mixed bag. While I appreciate the love for the history and culture of my people, too often a non-Native i.e., "white" writer, will present a really heavy handed approach to many things Native. No one actually says, "We are the lords of nothing".  I can't see anyone from back home saying such a corny thing, much less in this psuedo stoic hollywood Indian voice.  This I might blame on the director, and I know the screenwriter is using my tribe as a metaphor for his overall story of thieves on the run and such, but c'mon, can you do less corn, more contemporary reality?  It almost ruined the movie for me, ALMOST.

And of course, the crazy white guy we're supposed to root for gets the better of that exchange. It didn't ruin the movie for me, because that line was just one in a long litany of hacky dialogue. What ruined the movie for me was my decision not to walk out after 15 minutes.
