Beavermoose's Semi-Great American Road Trip
« on: August 20, 2016, 09:05:38 PM »
Hey guys,

I'll be road tripping through some of the US from Montreal to Vancouver throughout the month of September.
Since a lot of you live in the good 'ol Us of A, I thought you might be able to give me some suggestions of places to go, things to see.

My tentative itinerary is:

Montreal (Sept 2nd)
Toronto
Columbus
Indianapolis
Chicago
Somewhere in between there (Nebraska or Kansas) Open to suggestions.
Denver
Telluride (possibly to visit a friend whose working for the film festival)
Camping in a Colorado or Utah national Park
Salt Lake City
Somewhere in between there (Idaho or Nevada) Open to suggestions.
Portland
Seattle
Vancouver (Sept 30th)

I'll be mostly living out of my car, camping and couch surfing.
I'd much appreciate any suggestions of things to do both in and out the cities.
Couch surfing has always worked very well for me but if any filmspotters fancy a meet up and might be willing to put me up for a night I'd be more than willing to share my enormous supply of maple syrup. :)

You can couch surf at my house, Beavermoose! :)

If you'd like to stay here, just let me know about when you'll be coming through the SLC area and I'll put it on my calendar. I'd be happy to show you around.

Some interesting things around here:

Park City
Alpine Loop
Antelope Island State Park/The Great Salt Lake
Temple Square/Downtown SLC
Golden Spike National Historic Site (1 hr 45 minutes from my home)
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will be at The Vivint Smart Home Arena Delta Center, Sept. 23rd -26th. :)

I'm sure I can work out a space for you to crash when in Portland.  Depending on when you are in town, I'd love to meet up with you as well.

Touristy stuff:
Multnomah Falls
Vista House
Voodoo Donuts (the only one on this list that I would call "overrated")
Japanese Garden (possibly the most beautiful spot in Portland, but you have to pay for it)
Washington Park Zoo
Timberline Lodge

Not-so-touristy stuff:
Mcmenamins Edgefield (food, ale, concerts, gardens)
Forest Park, especially the walk in Upper McCleay Park to the Stone House
Short trails behind the Audubon Society
Walking across the St. John's Bridge
Eating at Burgerville

Just wait!  Mrs. oldkid and I came up with a quintessential Portland experience (mileage may vary and Martin Teller would give you a completely different list), all in one neighborhood.

Walk down Mississippi Avenue and look at all the unique and small shops there.
Then go to one of the thousands of carts in Portland, we recommend Stoopid Burger on Vancouver and Fremont.
Go across the street to New Seasons market, one of the high priced specialty supermarkets in Portland (which also conformed to the low income neighborhood it was helping to gentrify).
Walk up Williams to get a cup of espresso by an artiste barista at Rostrettos and watch hundreds of bikes pass by.
While on Williams, experience both our Anarchy bookstore and our Feminist bookstore.

Oh, and on the more standard list above, I have to add Sauvie Island which is a serine drive in the country.

And Sandy, next time you visit Portland, I should take you to some of these places.  You'd love it.

South of Chicago is Jolliet prison, so you could check out the opening of Blue's Brothers. I need to look up a couple of things.

My cart choice when I was in Portland was "Fried Egg I'm In Love" which was delicious.
As Portland beer options go, Deschutes is very good.

I should have tips on things to do in Colorado but I'm a terrible tourist.
