3. Korean New Wave (1999-2009)

Here's a list for those of us who didn't go to film school or didn't watch finish the film history miniseries' out there:

So what about the influence of John Ford on Samurai films/Spaghetti Westerns?  Is that a movement?

What about Japanese Anime, leading to the Matrix and beyond?

3. Japanese Classicists

Is this the 50s, with Masaki Kobayashi, Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Yasujirō Ozu?

What appeals to you about pre-code? I remember someone else around here was a big fan too. (Antares?) I watch a lot of pre-code and enjoy reading the website about it, but just as often the rough camera technique, often difficult sound and overall deterioration are a problem. Do you think there are people that enjoy it for these qualities, like those who enjoy vinyl for the hisses and pops?

I strongly considered Iranian New Wave.

I don't know about Totoro, but I will probably put the Japanese pre-code on my list as well.  Like westerns, they are taking a formal structure and twisting it, often to a degree that cannot be recognized.  These films had a profound influence on movie development, and these films are at the core of art-house entertainment.
