If I had a multiplex AND an arthouse in my neighborhood, I'd be 75snob/25schmoo.  However, having only the multiplex near my house, it's more 25snob/75schmoo.  I can take the train to the arthouse but I can't manage the driving.  Being a lefthand driver in a righthand world freaks me out when I drive more than 5kms from the house!  Also the last time I went to an arthouse (for Capote), I had a near-death experience as I was walking across the street when a taxi turned right through a redlight and came within an inch of wiping me off the planet!

That's HI-larious, saltine.

I mean I think you were trying to be funny; that is to say I think you were writing in a comical manner.  I don't think it's hilarious that you almost died.  That's not funny at all.

The snob/schmoe factor for me has to be based more on what I see than where I see it... as there's no art-house venue here per se. There are a few multiplexes which bring in the highbrow and the foreign titles with more limited screenings.  A junky old cinema at the beaches just closed last night. When I first got here, it was the place to see indies and foreign titles -- I saw Solomon and Gaenor, Amelie, Sunshine State, and Bride and Prejudice there.  But they seem to have gotten away from that lately, and it meant I didn't go across the intracoastal bridge to go to the most run-down cinema in the area anymore.

We're just getting Who Killed the Electric Car? here, and I can't recall a foreign title since Paradise Now, but I might not be remembering correctly.  The Orlando area has The Enzian, and tends to do a little better drawing the less mainstream titles.  When I travel, I sometimes try to see a movie I think might not open in my area.

I have a small theatre at the end of my street so I feel spoiled and, at the same time, too lazy to drive to any other theatre.  If movies don't come to my theatre, I'll usually wait for the DVD.  I'm always surprised that even though I live in a big city, I still really have to search out smaller films.  I remember Nightwatch wasn't even playing in the city and it had a really short run.

I'm definitely 75% snob 25% schmoe.  I love artsy films and I definitely hold a grudge against Hollywood for making such shitty films lately but I still have some respect for mainstream cinema.

Well, I blame this question, but I definitely went for some schmoe points today and watched Nanny McPhee.  Great fun -- a reminder of the days when Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks were among my favorites.

I watched that not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised. (I don't know why- I love Emma Thompson. Don't know why I didn't expect more from the film...)

I hit the local art theatre the other day- I don't know that Little Miss Sunshine counts as snob, but I did make the trek to support the art theatre instead of the cineplex where it was also playing, so I'm giving myself points for that. I think I'd be much more of an art-house movie goer if a. I had a car or b. the art theatre was closer to my apartment. Oh well- that's what DVD's for, I suppose.

On one hand, I grew up on strictly "Joe Schmoe" flicks, so I have a long-standing appreciation for them. On the other hand, my high school nights were spent renting nothing but arthouse flicks (not to mention softcore porn).

Nowadays, if a film makes me think, feel, or react in a proufoundly good way, I like it! Whether it's Fritz Lang's Metropilis, or Dumb and Dumber, if the story is somehow gripping, I tend to enjoy it.

So there!

50/50, though I'd probably be 75/25 for snob if the arthouse theater wasn't so far away and the normal multiplex wasn't within walking distance.

Hi everyone - it's my first post, so please be nice :)

Went with 50/50.  The nearest decent art house cinema to me is about 30 miles away, and I just don't get there that often.  My nearest multiplex only shows the biggies, and occasionally they'll get something a bit more off the beaten track.
