Episode 1.6-- Imprisoned

Oldkid: Well, Katara is a fine little rebel, isn't she?

Ideathy: She can't act for the life of her.

Oldkid: Can't act her way out of a paper bag.

DeathImpacto: Her brother's pretty bad, too.

Oldkid: I notice that we finally have the real Sokka back, quips and all.   "I know, I hate them too."

Ideathy: "It's the girl, you idiots"

DeathImpacto: "Oh, of course"

Oldkid: Better to be a bad actor than a stupid guard.

Ideathy: Isn't Sokka that, too, temporarily?

Oldkid: No one's perfect.  So what do you think of Katara's little rebellion?

DeathImpacto: Overdramatic.

Ideathy: She watches too much anime.

Oldkid: It would never work.  Prison break?  Only reason it worked is because all the guards were idiots.  That's the theme today: guards are idiots.

Ideathy: We already knew that most Fire Nation guards are idiots.

Oldkid: Not true... well, maybe most of them.  But this is the first strike back against the Fire Nation.  And it seems that the rebels are going to try to take back their villages as well.

DeathImpacto: Not that we ever see them again.

Ideathy: I don't think we see much of Katara's male friends again.

Oldkid: So it's your theory that she's a pretty serious heartbreaker?  At 14?

DeathImpacto: Seems like.

Ideathy: Do you see how many men she makes friends with and how many of them get a crush on her?

Oldkid:  Really?  A 14 year old?

Ideathy: The classic, "Come with me" line.

DeathImpacto: Have you seen Disney princesses?

Oldkid: Yeah, all 14-16.  But besides that, would she really respond with, "Sorry, I got the hots for that 12 year old over there"?

Ideathy: She could.

Oldkid: Well, let's keep an eye on this development.  Newsflash: 14 year old breaks hearts all over the world!  Okay, that's all for tonight then.

Episodes 1.7 and 1.8-- The Winter Solstice

Oldkid: Our first two-parter!  Yea!  I'd like to say something seemingly unrelated, tho.  The music is pretty good in this series, especially the music that ends each episode.  Lots of cool drums.

DeathImpacto: Even if we don't listen to it.

Mrs. Oldkid: You have to abbreviate the names, Oldkid.

Oldkid: No!  Never!
Okay, so we've got two episodes that are related, what do you think?

Ideathy: Spirits.

Oldkid: Yes, so we have our first step in the spirit world.  We got a forest spirit that is cranky.  Miyazaki, anyone?

Mrs. Oldkid: It's interesting that when the forest spirit wanted to destroy the town because his forest was destroyed, Aang didn't try to shift the blame to the fire nation.  Rather, he gave him hope that his forest would be restored.

Oldkid: So Aang is shown to be a perfect Buddhist again.

Mrs. Oldkid: He's supposed to be the perfect Buddhist.  He's the AVATAR.

DeathImpacto: And we have two undead spirits.  Well, not undead.  Just dead.

Oldkid: We have Roku and who else?

DeathImpacto: The dragon.

Oldkid: Roku's animal spirit.  Isn't it weird that Sokka and Aang were spirits for a while and then not?

Mrs. Oldkid: I hadn't noticed before that Iroh could see the spirit dragon.

Ideathy: He's old and closer to dying, so he could see him.

Mrs. Oldkid:  I have another idea

DeathImpacto: That Iroh is just too awesome?

Mrs. Oldkid: Beside that.  You know how Iroh is called the Dragon of the West.  And he knows about the dragons.  The story is that he killed the last of the dragons, but he actually saved the dragons.

DeathImpacto: But he saw Aang too

Mrs. Oldkid: We don't know he saw Aang, but we know he saw the spirit dragon.  I think it may be foreshadowing.

Oldkid: That's cool.  I forgot about Iroh and the dragons.  The humor seemed more ... stupid in these episodes.  More hammy faces, less clever sayings.

Ideathy: I like hammy faces.  Otherwise I wouldn't watch Fairy Tail.

Oldkid: Another reason for me not to watch Fairy Tail.

DeathImpacto: I was thinking of the toilet humor when you said "stupid humor."

Ideathy: We aren't talking about bones.  You know, the humerus.

Oldkid: Iroh also shows his badassness in the earlier episode.  And a bit too much flesh.

Ideathy: Very, very true.  And they gave Zuko a little bit of character here.

Oldkid: Other than "angry teenager"?

Ideathy: Yeah.  I don't consider "angry teenager" a real personality.  That's just expected.

DeathImpacto: I don't think I was an angry teenager.

Ideathy: You were just emo.

Oldkid: Zuko showed that he really cared about his uncle, and that he could turn away from his obsession with the Avatar so he could get his uncle saved.  His first positive action.

DeathImpacto: And then his obsession brought him into the Fire Nation again and almost got him arrested.

Ideathy: And let's be honest, his dad is a jerk and probably would have killed him.

Mrs. Oldkid: We haven't yet met Princess Wingnut yet have we?  Princess Fruitcake?  Princess Psychopath?

Oldkid: I think that last one is most accurate.

Mrs. Oldkid: Princess "I'd Rather Jab a Fork In My Eye Than Talk To Her"?

Ideathy: Princess serious-mental-disorder

Oldkid refuses to type in more names for the Princess of the Fire Nation.

Oldkid: But no, we haven't yet been introduced to her in the show.  Although I think we have a pretty good introduction here.

DeathImpacto: She doesn't come in until much later.

Ideathy: Not until the last book.

DeathImpacto: We should talk about the comet thing.

Oldkid: We don't want to say too much (although that never stopped us before).

Ideathy: Proceeds to say too much... gives away the whole ending of the show.

DeathImpacto: I mean talk about the information given in the episode.

Ideathy: Sozin's comet

Mrs. Oldkid: That the comet is coming and the Fire Lord will have all power.  There's a deadline and urgency.  Also upping the stakes of the badguy being super badguy.

Oldkid: So Aang has to learn all the bending skills by the end of the summer.  So he's got six months to do something that would normally take a decade.

DeathImpacto: Good luck!

Oldkid: Have fun storming the castle!

Ideathy: Hooray!

Oldkid: We're all going to die.  I mean really.

Ideathy: We are all going to die? Just from watching this show.

Oldkid: This show is secretly The Ring.   Well, then just to conclude this review, we want to let everyone know NOT to watch Avatar, or else you will all die.

Mrs. Oldkid: Get eaten by a spirit monster.

DeathImpacto: And forget how to use grammar.

Ideathy: But it's all good.  My dad's already forgotten.

Oldkid: Okay that's all for tonight.  No, all the rest of you, just be quiet!  Quiet!

Ideathy: What if I don't want to be quiet?

DeathImpacto: Never!!!!

Ideathy: I'll be up until 5AM if I have...

Suddenly it all becomes silent.  Peace out.

Part of me imagines that this is not a transcript and oldkid had a mental breakdown and started writing conversations that never happened.

MY CABBAGES!

I forget how Buddhist this show is. For some reason I just translate it to Japanese, which I know it isn't but the anime influences tend to outweight the Buddhist influences for me.

Oh, they happened all right.  And these conversations are not strange in my household.

That doesn't mean that a mental breakdown didn't happen.

Does your wife roll her eyes when everyone around her starts talking about animated TV series or movies ?

Nope lol
She actually quite enjoys talking about Avatar. And as far as other animated series go...sometimes I ramble on to her. Other times I ramble on to my sister

Mrs. Oldkid is fine to listen to anime discussions, so long as she can talk about her books, Covet and Sims.

 :o Huh?

Episode 1.9-- The Waterbending Scroll

Oldkid: My favorite move in this episode was Aang's air-carosal that spun a pirate and threw him off the ship.

Ideathy: Musta been a dizzy pirate.

Oldkid: This seemed like a very moralistic episode.  Don't steal and don't be jealous because someone learns faster than you.  Oh, and Katara is sometimes wrong.  VERY wrong.

Ideathy: Hold on, it's "don't steal unless it's from pirates," remember?

DeathImpacto: I think we should add, "Unless it's from pirates and you happen to be a very good warrior."  Because I think I shouldn't steal from pirates.

Ideathy: They aren't good warriors.

DeathImpacto: They aren't skilled warriors, but they are good.  Lots of good luck.

Oldkid: Stealing from theives is generally a bad idea.  Thieves don't like being stolen from.  They take it personally.

DeathImpacto: Especially if they have swords.

Ideathy: You know, you have to be a good sneak thief if you are going to be a thief. If someone steals from you, you aren't a good enough sneak thief.

DeathImpacto: If I were a thief and someone stole from me, I would recruit them.

Oldkid: So you guys have this whole philosophy of stealing.  Are you planning on using this philosophy?  When did I ever teach you about stealing?

Ideathy: I think I was like, five.

Oldkid: I just don't want to know.

DeathImpacto: So, Zuko showed up.  As usual.

Oldkid: Just like Team Rocket.

DeathImpacto: Except less blasting off.

Ideathy: Also less of a pleasure.

Oldkid: Actually, I like see Zuko make small steps of growing up.  And when he threw the lotus piece, I got a LOT of pleasure from that.
I just noticed that Iroh really is a major character.  I was wrong to call him minor.  And he really is a pleasure to have in almost every episode.

DeathImpacto: He's the driving force to what makes Zuko find Aang in this episode and some others.

Oldkid: The relationship between Zuko and Iroh is really interesting.  Zuko's always mad at him, because Iroh is always irritating Zuko, but they really care for each other deeply.

Ideathy: Either like a brother relationship or a father-son relationship.

DI: What about an uncle-nephew relationship?

Ideathy: It isn't really like that.

Oldkid: More intimate than the normal uncle-nephew relationship.  They can't really live without each other, as we will see.  (That's not a spoiler, really more of a hint).

DI: "Maybe that really should be a proverb."

Ideathy: Zuko seems to do well as long as he is relying on someone.  I wonder if he has a dependent personality disorder or something.

Oldkid: Like most teenagers.   Can't live with parents and can't live without em.

DI: He gets on just fine on his own later on.

Oldkid: I disagree.

Ideathy: Way later on, because he forces himself to separate.

Oldkid (Ignoring the long conversation concerning many theories about Zuko and many many spoilers): Actually this episode doesn't really have much to talk about.  It's pretty basic with no new revelations.  There were some good lines, though.

DI: Oh!  They got a water bending scroll!

Mrs. Oldkid: Yeah?

DI: We didn't mention that.  They got it from the pirates.

Oldkid: Is that really important?

DI: It's a water bending scroll.   So they can actually learn stuff.

Oldkid: Before they get to the North Pole.   Okay, still, pretty weak.  As far as a plot point.

DI: It really was the focus of the episode.  And explains the title of the episode.

Oldkid: Well, yeah.   Well, thanks for joining us today!  Join us next time when Ideathy says:

Ideathy: (smiles creepily) Onii-chan...

Oldkid: I gotta go.
