War of the Princesses: Best Disney Movies
« on: October 18, 2016, 05:39:00 AM »
I wanted to check out Bondo's favourite Disney movies but it appears there is no poll that asks the question - I hope, otherwise this will be embarrassing. Something had to be done about that, if only to make chardy vote for animated movies.

And yes, I realise this should technically be called a « Walt Disney Studios Best » poll, but just...don't be that guy.

I expect there will be no disagreements at all...

Ah, the problem with Disney films is there's a bunch I'm not entirely sure I've seen. Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella etc. Of those I have a relatively distinct memory of :

Fantasia
The Jungle Book
The Emperor's New Groove
Aladdin
The Lion King
Zootopia
Fantasia 2000
The Fox and the Hound
Mulan
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

I do think Snow white, aside from one stunning sequence* (when she first goes into the forest) is genuinely awful. The dwarfs are insuferable, the animation is very very poor (especially Snow White), the singing is shrill and the story is barely coherent (is she a servant or a princess ?), not to mention ridiculously old-fashioned. A cultural artefact that was groundbreaking in its time, certainly, but I think we can stop showing it to children.

* I guess I'll add the queen to old witch transformation, that's pretty good.

I don't expect Corndog's top movie will be much of a surprise. Here is my list.

The Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Aladdin

Zootopia
Wreck-It-Ralph
Big Hero 6
Hercules
Mulan
The Little Mermaid
Alice in Wonderland
Frozen

Tangled
The Emperor's New Groove
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Aristocats
Atlantis: the Lost Empire
Sleeping Beauty
Cinderella
Pinocchio
Lilo & Stitch
Treasure Planet
The Sword in the Stone
Robin Hood
The Jungle Book
The Fox and the Hound
The Princess and the Frog
The Great Mouse Detective
Tarzan
Peter Pan

One Hundred and One Dalmatians
The Black Cauldron
Lady and the Tramp
Oliver and Company
The Rescuers
Bambi
Dumbo

Brother Bear
Home on the Range
Meet the Robinsons

This all feels so wrong. It's like making children fight, but less fun. There are so many I have not watched in too long.I am clearly recency-biased.

(Also, how long ago would you have watched those movies you do not remember ? Were you still watching them in your preteen years ?)

You think WIR is already a classic ?

Why do people hate Treasure Planet so much ? This from someone who has only seen it once ten years ago.

I would say general wisdom has Frozen established as a Disney classic because it was a Lion King sized phenom when it came out, staying in pop culture for well over a year. So the designation isn't based on how long ago a film was released. Ralph came out the year before Frozen. It wasn't a hit on that scale, but as a film, yes I think Ralph is a Disney Classic.

I also only saw Treasure Planet years ago so I couldn't go into specifics.
